VERY BAD eGPU performance on Lenovo Yoga c940 - due to 9th gen inten CPU

2020-02-29, 21:12 PM

Hi there! I bought the YOGA c940 15" which is a really powerful yet decent machine! I think it is great! However. Connecting it to an eGPU it performs clearly worse than my YOGA 720 did. I documented this here: https://egpu.io/forums/pc-setup/less-egpu-performance-with-better-notebook/ As I did not change the rest of my setup the problem has to be with the layout of PCIe on the c940 or the 7700h vs the 9750h itself.

A mod form the eGPU forums found out that this bad performace is partially due to the bad 9th gen CPU Optimisation in regard to TB3 in other notebooks. Check it out here: https://egpu.io/forums/builds/2015-15-dell-precision-7510-q-m1000m-6th4ch-gtx-1080-ti-32gbps-m2-adt-link-r43sg-win10-1803-nando4-compared-to-tb3-performance/#post-72109

Could someone please pass this on to Lenovo dev department?! They might want to know about this issue - especially as their own GPU dock is about to be released some time soon. I guess they would not be amused by people finding out afterwards that their notebook eGPU dock combination underperforms.

Feel free to contact me in this regard.

All the best
