Title says W540????
In any case, there is no backdoor password so a locked drive cannot be used.

Thanks for the info. I bought thae laptop from my older brother. He bought it several months ago for his wife. They used it twice and they ended up buying a mpore expensive laptop.
Anyway, he remembered the HD password and that got me past the small blue HD window. Now, I cannot get past the regular login that presents with a screensaver background. I've tried restarting, entering theHD password and then selecting F1, F12 and esc all on different reboots but cannot access any menue to reset the login password .I researched the web and there are a few methods to reset the login password which I downloaded to a USB sytcick but again, I cannot access any type of boot or command menu.
I wanted to check here for the best method to reset the login password.
Help please. :-)

Hi shelbyman ,
As what richk informed , harddrive password itself has no backdoor .
Now that you manage to get the valid harddrive password to unlock it , so it did serve its purpose of securing ownership.
Maybe you can just ask for the Windows log in from your brother and if you want to reset it just turn off the laptop and look for the Novo button (small round key with an inverted u icon) usually next to the power button to turn it on.
Novo menu would offer system recovery using One key recovery from initial backup and it would delete all dat in the pc and reset it back the way it was from out of the box.
You may download similar guideline steps from the manual downloadable from support.lenovo.com .
Hope this answered your query
