What kind of memory does the Yoga use

2012-11-20, 3:17 AM

So I read the manual, but maybe I missed something;

The spec says DDR3L-1333 but the part list has DDR3L-1600

I know the "L" is low voltage and likely 1.35v, not sure you can use 1.5v, but I am sure that is a bad idea.

What about the CAS?

If is it is the 1333, I see on newegg they have 1333 that is PC3-10600, 10660, and 10666

ALSO as far as the SD slot goes, are there any specs on the type and max size memory you can slide in that thing?

My Lenovo came with Sharetronic (???) 4GB DDR3 1333MHz (PC3 10666) 1.5V 9-9-9-24 Laptop memory. I replaced it after two days with this: Corsair XMS3 8GB. It has identical characteristics and only $30 from Amazon (I bought it at $33, go figure :smileymad:)

SD slot should support up to 128GB card, but personally, I would recommend to go with second MSATA SSD that is relatively easy to add and would be significantly faster comparing to flash. Here's link to compatible module: Crucial 128GB m4 mSATA.

So overall, you are looking at just $130 to convert this already excellent laptop into truly premium machine.

really now?

Crucial says you should use 1600 not 1333 and the DDR3L spec is supposed to be 1.35v not 1.5v...

I suspect a few kinds work, I am curious what is the most bang for the buck.. I'd think 1600 1.35v but maybe that is not going to give you anything over 1.5v 1333 in this machine.

My original memory is DDR3, not DDR3L, so I doubt you need to look for a low voltage memory. And the difference between 1333 and 1600 is negligible. You will never see it in real life.

I'm curious why the owners manual has inconsistent specs within itself and with the RAM actually installed.

Maybe an official recomendation from Lenovo?

Thanks for that info btw, good to know what is actually installed in this thing.

It may very well be that different variants come with different modules. I bought my Yoga at BestBuy, so it is possible that direct Lenovo models have slightly different configuration. I've seen this many times. Anyway, why don't you first get Yoga, then look what memory came with it and find a similar upgrade. It's literally 1 minute to get to the RAM (right behind keyboard), so not much effort.

I just picked up my machine from best buy last night.  I was trying to figure out what memory to get to upgrade with and saw mixed reports between 1.5 and 1.35.  I then remembered a program called cpuid / cpuz that will pull stats from the SPD on the ram module.  It does indeed appear to be running @ 1.35v even though it is the previously mentioned Sharetronic ram that is installed..  Must be undervolted...

I purchased Patriot PSD38G1600L2S from Amazon, it was $39.99 and shipping through prime was free.  It is 1600Mhz and 1.35v. It arrived this morning and I just got it installed a while ago.  It seems great so far.  The keyboard isn't *quite* as flush with the bezel as it was, I think when I install the second msata I'll try to get my hands on some double sided tape to put on the back of the keyboard as they did from factory.
