Why isn't the latest BIOS 76CN35WW for Yoga 2 Pro available for download ?

2014-06-29, 18:47 PM

The 76CN35WW BIOS is being shipped with new Y2P for some time now.  The available one for download on Lenovo support site is still 76CN31WW.  Why is Lenovo depriving early adopters from getting the latest BIOS ?

Hello hobbitz,

Newer version of BIOS does not mean "additional" features. If there is a need to, the Lenovo engineering team would release the BIOS for the previous shipped Y2P for sure.

I am using a Y2P myself and have no issues with it so far. Are you facing any issues with your Y2P?

Thanks

Maybe because all Lenovo employees work either in marketing or in development of new products, and no one in support for existing products?

Seriously, lack of driver updates and support is so cheap from Lenovo. Especially because there ARE issues that need to be addressed in existing drivers.

Lenovo, a popular and higher end product such as Yoga 2 Pro deserves much better support.

Just off the top of my head, but there's plenty of other complaints in this very forum...

- Old and buggy display drivers (some apps and games don't work properly, ie. Photoshop)

- Old wifi drivers, many people experience problems with wifi connection

- Old touchpad drivers with shaky movement when tapping or multi touch. New Synaptec drivers released by other companies are MUCH better, but unfortunately don't work fully for Yoga.

- DPTF drivers throttle CPU way too much when used in tablet modes, which in more demanding apps makes tablet experience choppy and unusable.

- Update the yellow color solution so we don't need to use Energy Manager JUST to have proper yellow color display (uninstalling EM makes yellow muddy and green). Energy manager conflicts with functionality of some other apps.

Maybe it is to work with the newer hardware they are shipping?

My new yoga was manufactured 24 days ago. I got the BIOS update among other software updates. I have the updates but still sport the older processor and the single band 7260 N WIFI card.

If only the BIOS update came as a file on the D drive, I would upload a copy here. However, it did not and making a backup of my BIOS will share device specific information with the world. I have however posted a copy of the new EM that seems to fix the yellow issue for good. Please let me know if that works.

As I find new fixes to the old issues, I will share them.

What I would like to know very much is if the (new, updated) EM is still needed to fix the yellow, or if they fixed the yellow completely only with the new BIOS?

No, the EM is still needed. If you take off the EM from the startup, you will still see the crappy yellow, even with the new BIOS (trust me, that is 1 of 5 programs on my startup :()

The BIOS with the 17.0.1.5 intel driver seems to do good for now. However, before I upload  any new drivers, I want to play with it some more.

hobbitz, splus,

exjamjus (former employee) is right in that sometimes we introduce a BIOS that only includes updates to support minor hardware changes - new processor or wifi card, etc.  Exisiting units don't necessarily "need" that right away and those updates carry forward into later versions of a BIOS that includes full field fixes and is released to the web.

That said, I agree that it would be a real benefit to include more frequent BIOS and driver updates.

This is something we are actively working to improve this year!

To some of the concerns...

The yellow color issue is addressed through BIOS + Power management.   Both components need to be in place, and I am aware of the limitations in this approach, including those who choose to run Linux.

The Wifi should be improved with the 17.x driver releases. I've pointed to 17.0.2 drivers that came out for Think and would work on the Y2P, and so based on indest's feedback, it sounds like we have newer versions making their way out for idea.

Thanks for the continued feedback.

Mark
