The battery indicator led itself would serve as a good measure of amount of battery charge that we can check.
Proceeding further, the hardware manual also provides steps to check operational charging and checking battery health (page 22).
Checking operational charging
To check whether the battery charges properly during operation, use a discharged battery pack or a battery pack that has less than 50% of the total power remaining when installed in the computer. Perform operational charging. If the battery status indicator or icon is not lit, remove the battery pack and let it return to room temperature. Reinstall the battery pack. If the charge indicator or icon is still off, replace the battery pack. If the charge indicator is still not lit, replace the system board.
Checking the battery pack
Battery charging does not start until the Power Meter shows that less than 95% of the total power remains; under this condition the battery pack can charge to 100% of its capacity. This protects the battery pack from being overcharged or from having a shortened life. To check your battery, move your cursor to the Power Meter icon in the icon tray of the Windows® taskbar and wait for a moment (but do not click it), and the percentage of battery power remaining is displayed. To get detailed information about the battery, double-click the Power Meter icon. Note: If the battery pack becomes hot, it may not be able to be charged. Remove it from the computer and leave it at room temperature for a while. After it cools down, reinstall and recharge it.
I hope this helps answer your query.

Charging indicator is lit and there is no problem with charging. Hardware System test in vantage says battery is in good health. However I couldnt finish the hardware test in the first run because it shutdown during the test. Second run with charger plugged in completed and showed no problems. I also did super pi test with the charger off. It shutdown in 32m test on battery and finished the 32m test with the charger plugged in. I need to find out if it shuts down due to heat or if the battery cannot compensate increased wattage. I also checked the temperature. Max was 51 C degrees.

How is the battery report?
Once it shut down without the charger, would you be able to power it up soon after?
Check the led to see if it is blinking amber.
If this is amber then connect the charger for 1-2 hours without turning on the laptop. We expect that it should change amber to white.

tested with ubuntu live with usb stick. loaded well to desktop. before I was able to test it, it shutdown when the battery was %97. All the results makes me believe the problem is a hardware issue either battery or motherboard.
after using t420 for 3 years yoga 520 was a disastrous experience for me considering that it was a brand new unit. not being able to spot the problem exactly makes it really annoying. maybe 80x8 units have engineering or manufacturing problems. going to return the unit and buy a different brand.

As mentioned in the Operational charging test " Reinstall the battery pack. If the charge indicator or icon is still off, replace the battery pack. If the charge indicator is still not lit, replace the system board. "
You may use our post here to serve as reference to the case to best describe the issue you are having.
Hoping for the best.
