YOGA 3 14 - How to reclaim my Esc key and permanently disable Paper Display

2015-04-27, 13:16 PM

I apologize in advance to the readers of this post as I look like a giant complainer, but I seriously can't believe the devs screwed me permanently by hi-jacking my Esc key.

Dear Lenovo Devs - For the love of God... Seriously!!! You've hi-jacked my Esc as part of the F-keys??? I accessed the BIOS and reversed the Fn button so the F-keys act as normal so I can play games properly. Now I need to press "Fn+Esc" for my Esc key to work properly, else it activates PAPER DISPLAY of all things!!!!

1) Paper Display is not a welcome addition to my laptop experience

2) Could you not think of a better way to give someone the option to activate Paper Display without hi-jacking the Esc key?

3) Does anyone have any idea how to permanently disable Paper Display so that when I have the Fn key reversed in BIOS, my Esc key still works normally?

Mod's Edit: Moved model name to the front of Subject line for better visibility.

Dear Tigbond

Welcome in lenovo community

You can press Fn+Esc to toggle the paper display on and off. Right in the user manual and on the keyboard if you can decipher the icon on the Escape key.

Thanks

Alaa

Alaa, that's not the issue.

The issue is that when he turns off the F key swap in bios so that proper F keys are available sans Fn key, it also reverses the ESC key, so to use ESC, he has to hit the Fn key... Honestly, a pretty bad setup. We need a software based keyboard mapper so that we can tell windows what we want it to be using the keys for. I mean, even if I uninstall paper display, they key then becomes useless as it doesn't turn into a default ESC key......

Some of us prefer to use old fashioned F keys directly without having to press another button, and it's great there is an option to swap this, but because it also swaps the ESC, it just causes another problem....

Cheers!

Steph S.

I haven't tried it yet, but you may want to look here as there are two different potential options.

edit - so I just tried the app Sharpkeys....it would seem the "Paper Display" key is one of a few keys on the board that can't be remapped (the software doesn't detect a keypress...). sorry.

Thank you to the above posters for your replies. My next step was to try a key remapping software. I've also uninstalled Paper Display and am now left with a non-functional Esc key.

Apologies for my original post...I was frustrated at the time of writing it.

Suggestion for devs... Nothing wrong with flipping the keys, but why no option to flip them around without accessing BIOS? It took me about two hours of my time to figure it out... Not really the user experience you're trying to give your customers, is it? Also, if you're going to hijack an important key like the Esc, at least give the user an easy option somewhere to opt out...

Thanks!

I have the exact same problem. Any luck with fixes or anything? I'm desperately looking for a program that will work but so far, no good. I bet there's something in the registries but no luck there either.

Yeah Fn-key combinations can't be remapped in software.

Not sure why the Fn-lock swaps the Esc key to Paper Display. Nor why Paper Display needs a driver. Flux manages to do more than Paper Display with less system intrustion.

Same issue, really annoying, makes this laptop unusable for those who need F keys + Esc.

Any solution?

Same problem - really frustrating. I also tried the key reassignment programs (Sharp Keys and KeyTweak) and they don't work because the paper display button is not recognized. PLEASE HELP US LENOVO, YOU'RE OUR ONLY HOPE
