Re: Yoga 13 Auto Rotate

2012-11-19, 15:44 PM

I experienced this problem also and its such a pain that I was just about to return the IdeaPad Yoga to where I purchased it.  But then I began to wonder if this was just a problem experienced while running on battery when the battery is low.  I suspected this as I wasn't experiencing any problems when I first purchased the ultrabook last week, but I've been running it on battery and haven't had it plugged in for a while.  When I recharged the IdeaPad Yoga, the problem went away.  Are you experiencing the problem when plugged in?  I'm still trouble shooting to see if this is indeed what's going on, but I'm not having the problem now on a fully charged battery.

Andy1990zx, hardware ID is REV_1125. Thank you for looking into this.

drseitz, I think you're on to something. Last night I wasted a ton of time troubleshooting this and seeing it happen inconsistently, but when I finally put it away last night, it wasn't rotating at all. And that's after it had been on battery for a couple of hours. This morning, after it was on the charger all night, I turn it on, and presto, the rotation sensor is working again. The battery wasn't that low -- ie, I'm sure I had an hour or two left -- but weirdly the battery level does seem to affect it. Weird.

Re: Yoga 13 Auto Rotate

My Yoga's Auto Rotate was not working when I first purchased it from BB.  I thought it was a hardware defect but went ahead and re-installed both the Intel Management Engine driver and the Intel Chipset driver (downloaded from Lenovo - not the ones on the Yoga already) and this fixed the problem after a reboot.  I am not sure which driver did the trick but don't really care since it is working fine for me now and has been since purchase on the introduction day.

Re: Yoga 13 Auto Rotate

So frustrated with this. I decided to restore the Yoga to the backup I made out-of-the-box (Factory config) to see if that solved the rotation/keyboard issue.

Full charge. Stock software. Not rotating.

When it does work briefly, it typically will rotate to Portrait mode (even though I have it in my lap, typing) and then stop working after that. So I'm thinking either some driver is crashing, or I just got a unit with a bum rotation sensor.

I wish I could swap it out at Best Buy, but they're out of stock in all the local stores.

I'm going to wait for the Thanksgiving holiday to pass, and if I don't find some kind of solution by then, I'm going to take it back for a refund and give Lenovo some time to debug this model a bit further. I'd be more patient, but I'm also getting hit by the "keyboard stops responding, have to close the laptop to reenable it" problem.

I Tried Seabumbs suggestion and downloaded the management engine and chipset drivers from the Lenovo site and applied them then rebooted. No Joy, the auto rotation still works very intermittently. Any other thoughts out there? Thanks!

The management engine software downloaded from Lenovo's site wouldn't even install for me. I got the UAC permission prompt, but then it never went into the installation process.

I'm starting to wonder if this is a hardware issue, since not everyone is having it, yet I had it even after rolling back to the factory Win 8 install last night.

Re: Yoga 13 Automatic Screen Rotation Not Working Anymored

2012-11-21, 7:47 AM

It's rev_1125.

It's weird. When I turn the system on, the rotation works fine.

After it's been on for a while, the screen will spontaneously rotate once (when I haven't actually changed orientation), and then not respond anymore to rotation. Once that happens, turning it on/off, rebooting, etc. doesn't help. The only thing that will make it work again is not to use it for a number of hours.

This makes me think that perhaps the sensor is physically failing once it warms up? It's really odd.

Any resolution to this? I just bought the Yoga yesterday and the rotation doesn't work. I've uninstalled Lenovo transitions. The rotation lock button does nothing at all. I assume I would receive some sort of confirmation once its pressed. Nothing seems to happen.

Re: Yoga 13 Automatic Screen Rotation Not Working Anymored

I went as far as completely wiping the Windows installation, doing a clean install, and only installing device drivers.

My Yoga's screen rotation will work for about an hour, and then the screen will rotate 90 degrees from whatever position it was in, and automatic rotation will then stop working. Doesn't work again until the system has been off for a while, so I'm guessing it's some kind of hardware failure in the sensor.

Yoga's going to go back to Best Buy tomorrow. I'm going to check out the Asus Transformer book in December, and then either get that, or pick up a Yoga in late December when they've hopefully ironed out more of these teething issues.

It's a shame, because I love the design.
