Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

Just for anyone who is interested, my Yoga, which is fine besides high frequency coil whine, was manufactured 11/29/12 and I got it in mid-December.  Silver i5 4GB 128GB model

Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

My Yoga is also emitting quite high fan noise whilst idle. The fans in the Yoga are two Lightweight & Ultra-thin Cooling Fans EG50040V1-C020-S9A. They are just 4mm high, however, they run constantly. Does anyone know if there are similar more quite fans around?

I would really like to see a fix for the fan noise issue, because it would make the yoga a perfect device for me.

Hopefully Lenovo provides us with a BIOS update soon or someone else is able to solve the issue.

Personally I think it would be enough for me to reduce the speed of the fans and have some more heat instead.

Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

2013-01-03, 20:24 PM

The noise began the moment the computer booted up. I installed all updates and restarted...noise still there. I used off and on for 9 hours yesterday and have continued to use today. The noise begins immediately upon startup and never stops.

I purchased my Yoga 13 directly from Lenovo's website. I called the warranty department and they advised I speak with the post sales group since I was having issues straight out of the box. I was advised the Yoga 13 sounds louder than many laptops because it has two fans. However, I was told the low buzzing noise I'm getting does not sound normal. It can be heard nearly 20 feet away in a quiet room.

I went to Best Buy this morning and worked on the display model for awhile. I could tell the fan was on if I lifted the laptop up to to my ear, but it does not make the loud noise my unit makes. Seems pretty clear I got a bad one.

The post sales department informed me they were processing a request for a replacement for me (instead of me having to send to warrany department for repair and wait for it to be returned). I was told I would hear from a supervisor about my replacement within 2-3 days.

if you don't hear from they in three days, call lenovo and escalate your case, which is actually pretty easy.

Chalk me up for a non-stop fan

I don't have the high pitched whine people seem to have, but my fan is definitely on from the second I wake it up from sleep mode.

Would love to hear that Lenovo is making a firmware update to possibly fix this -- let the darn fan calm down until the computer starts getting warm!

Has anyone checked to see if the system has the ability to pause / slow the fan?

Or, are these fans always on by design.  Perhaps they can't be throttled / turned off while the system is running.

Are there other fans in the system which do throttle?

The fans are able to run at different speeds and they are also able to stop running, even when the system is running. This is at least what they did some times at the beginning in my Yoga.

Mine runs all the time, but it's not too bad and I don't notice it most of the time because the tv is usually on anyway.  Would be nice to get a fix though.

Just a note to all you Yoga owners, the same issue (buzzing fan) occurs with the Lenovo Twist. I am awaiting a second replacement Twist at present. (Would try for a refund but simply can't bear to waste any more time on this.)  It seems to me Lenovo have bought a bad batch of fans (where the blades hit the housing). Come on Lenovo, fess up and offer your customers a solution.
