Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

Hi. I got the yoga 13. Love it. But i may return it because of the fan noise. I ll wait a week. If they can do a bios update or something. But it s really annoying. I woke up in the morning. Laptop was ice cold. I turned it on. Noise started. It s nothing related to heat of the cpu. It s not related to what you are doing.( surfing on web or wacthing flash videos or office). Please someone fix this. Otherwise i ll return it. And i tried tpf fan control. None of the fan controls sees the fan. They can see the cpu temp, but not fan speed.

I also tried the tpf fan control program, and it doesn't seem to work.

I watched the temperatures as I woke the computer up this morning, and the fan didn't seem to engage until about 40 degrees C.  Sometimes it gets hotter than that, but I can't seem to get it to go lower for any significant length of time.

tpfancontrol is for thinkpads only and probably does not apply here. Hopefully lenovo can update the BIOS to fix the fan speeds, which is actually not difficult to do.

Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

So I tried calling Lenovo support, and it took three phone calls to find someone who even remotely understood the issue (none of them knew what the Yoga was... way to be prepared, Lenovo support!)... and she was quite nice, at first misunderstanding me and telling me to just close the computer, put it to sleep, or turn it off.  : \  Finally she said to take it back to Best Buy and see if they can do anything about it.  Yeah.

So if there are any Lenovo technicians or engineers listening, I'd really like either a highly technical excuse involving temperatures and heat flow, or a software/firmware tweak to allow the fans to run at a lower RPM (still keeping the internals cool enough to not burn out any components, of course).  I don't mind if they turn on when it gets _hot_, but constantly running isn't cool (pun intended).

If there is something they can do to update the computer to run quieter, I'll wait for it... otherwise this thing is getting returned.

Lenovo Technicians, Lenovo Engineers?  Are you there, please?

Hey,

Thanks for the feedback on the fan...

Could you share a bit more... what model type do you have (look for the model type on the box or bottom of the system)?    Did the fan run continuously right out of the box (I think that is what is being reported) or after a bit of use?

Having reports from several different customers noting whether system is running cool or hot while fan is running constantly would be helpful, as well as confirmation of whether the fan continues even while the system is idle for a couple of mins.

We can definitely look into this, and appreciate an additional details that you can share.

I realize my questions seem a bit redundant given the posts above, but I'm thinking ahead to others thay may join, and trying to gather enough info here to get a consistent set of observed fan behaviors.

Thanks

mark

Mine is yoga 13 model no: 20175. it was noisy right out of the box. i turned it on and it was the first thing that i noticed. i do not think it s related to overheating. Because it starts as soon as i turn it on in the morning.

Model 20175. Fan runs from initial power on, regardless of temperature. I rarely use mine in an environment quite enough for me to notice the noise, but I did notice that the fan was continuous.

Mark, thank you for responding!

It was like this to begin with.  Like the other user, it was the first thing I noticed (and immediately dispelled the mystique built up around this otherwise great computer).  But, like I said above, it only turns on after a few seconds of use, then it will not shut off until it goes to sleep (or is shut down, obviously).  I can let it sit on my lap for minutes, with no programs open (other than the normal background things), and the fan stays on.

The screenshot I took of HWMonitor's output, shown in a previous post) should give you a good idea of what is going on.

The sticker on the bottom reads:

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13

Model Name: 20175

Mfg Date: 12/09/28

...and other things.

Hello, please run your Task Manager to check the CPU usage of a process: WMI Provider Host, and also tell me the total CPU usage while idling.
