I don't believe the fan is capable of a lower RPM setting.  That means the solution is on or off, based on temp.  Instead of a constant whir, you will have to listen to it turn on a few minutes, then off, then on.... Which is more annoying, always on or ramping up and down?

some Apple macbooks have exactly this feature.  The fan will not turn on until the temps are more than 65C.  Lenovo can simply disable the fan until the temp reaches 50C.

Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

Thanks, GregV.  Great post and that really illustrates that there is no reason for the fan's behavior.  We haven't actually heard back from NINE yet, who is probably still catching up, so there may be hope if they want to take this seriously.  The solution you alluded to (a BIOS toggle to change the threshold) would be absolutely excellent.  I hope the development team out there understands what we're articulating here, because 40C is an absurdly low threshold -- as you pointed out with floris1988's post.  For those who prefer an assuredly cool touch--more than on other laptops-- the toggle could simply accomodate that as such.  For the rest of us who prefer quiet operation, a toggle enabling a threshold more in line with normal laptop behavior would solve the issue.

Folks, and by folks I mean Lenovo, take a look at this post on reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/16lcy5/apple_macbook_air_happiness/

That's not my post; that's what I ran into when researching this issue.  If you ask me it's a real shame that we have users with this kind of reaction:

"The biggest problem was the **bleep** fan noise when there was really no load on the machine. Are you kidding me?"

Let's get a BIOS or driver update here to let us change the fan threshold and I bet we can see a lot fewer negative posts like that and a lot better word-of-mouth about this otherwise generally great machine.  Barring that, I'd imagine I'll be pursing other options.

I used my Yoga in Germany where it is winter right now and I installed SpeedFan to at least see the temp of the components in the Yoga. I noticed that the fans switch off at 35°C for the core and are switched back on at 36°C. I hope this helps and explains why the fans are running constantly at 40°C Core temp.

A BIOS update would be really amazing.

I would love to read news, journals and book on a quiet machine.

Just got a new machine from Lenovo (Orange i7) and it's still noisy.

Also, the keyboard on this one seems to be loose at the top right end too (although not as bad as the first one).

I'm glad Lenovo finally anwsered something on this topic. The rest of the machine is awesome, and there's no better hybrid on the market yet. I'll be sticking to this machine for now...(if the keyboard stays the way it is now, otherwise this one is going back too, loose clicky keyboard is annoying too)

There may be a design issue with Yoga that required developers to code this very low threshold. This may include temperature sensitive components near CPU, bad passive cooling, insufficient air flow (that may prevent to ramp up fan frequency) and miriad of other problems. If this is the case, no simple BIOS update would solve our problems.

I decided to return Yoga to the retailer as there are too many other nitpicks that I have with it that just should not be present in $1,000 laptop.

I have to say I would recomend people buy the Yoga from Best Buy.  The Lenovo.com 15% restocking fee has me concerned.  I'd feel more comforatable buying something like this (that may need a return) from Best Buy than to have to worry about a 15% restocking fee.

Expecialy because I suspect they are going to say the fan is a 'design feature' and normal.

Same here with the Yoga13 clementine orange i7 model. I just registered to lend a voice (and, no I'm not going to blast my "nerd rage" all over the place).:smileylol:

It would be nice, for the power users, to have control over this. Even if it is a opt-in bios change. Just give us the temp specs of the components and see what we can do... it does literally start the fan very time an application is started. It is only noticeable in a quiet environment, but in all honesty the turning on and off (mostly on) of the fan is a little jarring.

Lenovo, thanks for listening and your continued attention to this topic!!!

Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

My i7/256GB/8GB just got in to the store and will be shipped as soon as I pay for it. I've been waiting for months... However, this fan issue is really bothering me, since an annoying fan is a main reason I'm exchanging my present expensive laptop after just a year. I desperately need a QUIET laptop. I am so dissapointed to hear about this issue, the yoga just seemed so great. It is also terrible that we don't hear back from Lenovo. So, my most important question:

- DOES THIS ISSUE AFFECT ALL YOGAS? if so, there's no need to even have it shipped here.

- And then, I'm also wondering if you guys are aware of any similar hybrid machines being released sometime soon. The ones I have seen so far haven't been convincing in their design and/or specs.

Yeah, I'm just goign to cancel my order, honestly.  I do think it's probably going to be called a "design feature," and my order isn't going to ship for such a long time that it's not particularly worth waiting on a third Yoga just to find that it's not going to be addressed properly--or can't be technically.

It's a good idea, but the machine isn't up to par. Supply chain constraints and long shipping times gave me plenty of time to think about this, too, I have to say.

Can someone please record this noise?  The "grinding" noise that has been described is specifically of interest to me.
