Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

2013-01-18, 1:25 AM

I bought a Yoga about a month ago, the keyboard was defective so i had to send it back.

I just got a new one, the keyboard is fine but the fan almost never stop (it stops for about 20s every hour or so).

On my original yoga, i heard the fan only one or twice an hours,, now it's all the time and it's driving me crazy, you can hear the yoga from 5 meters away!!!!!  i'm considering sending it back a second time (to get a refund, this time).

It was my first time buying a Lenovo Product and i'm quite disapointed....

You said it perfectly. I have the exact same situation with mine. I hope Lenovo reads this.

The fan is the only real problem on mine.

A slight coil wine causes some annoyance, but it's not too bad. And the keyboard seems to work fine; there's a tiny (1/32nd inch) gap on the right hand side... I can live with that.

Just a note to flobo that I had precisely the same issue with a new Lenovo Twist. Machine with defective keyboard sent back, replacement has noisy fan, on almost constantly. Are Lenovo not quality checking their suppliers' outputs?

Hi UNSCleric. This may not be relevant, in which case I apologise, but as I have exactly the same issue with my new (and replacement) Twist I have been monitoring this thread as well as a similar Twist thread. I recorded the sound you describe coming from my Twist to convince my reseller that I had a case for a replacement (which two weeks on and six weeks after receiving the first machine with a faulty keyboard, I have still not received).

I made a complete reinstall to get W8 Enterprise, and noticed that fan noise. However, i made a second reinstall. This time fan noise was much less than in the first install. The second time was different:

  • - I made the installation UEFI compatible.
  • - I used newer drivers from lenovo site, where available.
  • - I installed drivers starting from chipset and energy management drivers, trying to follow some kind of dependency order.

I think the first installation was running CPU constantly at 2,4 GHz. This new installation varies the frequency, as it should.

I have returned my first Yoga 13 (i7) because of the unbearable coil whine plus the fan blades were touching the body and making noise in the tablet mode. The reseller convinced me to try another one, as they've sold around 100 pcs and nobody complained about the fan noise.
I already returned the second piece. This time, the blades were not touching the body but the coil whine and constant noise were still there. You wouln't expect this from a € 1.200 ultrabook.
I contacted the Lenovo support and they were not aware of this issue at all.

Besides the fan issue, I haven't noticed any other problems. This would be an awesome product, if only the Chinese were using higher quality fans for $3 extra....  What a shame Lenovo.

I think I might wait for the next gen Yoga, because I really love this concept or at least if they could do some SW fix. However, not sure if this is not an issue of simply bad HW thermal design...
Or maybe I'll get an Asus Zenbook touch instead.

mrepik:

http://www.digitaltrends.com/laptop-reviews/asus-zenbook-ux51vz-review/

"At idle, the fan constantly spins, generating a maximum of 43.7 decibels. Load testing shot this number up 49.5 decibels, which is louder than average for a laptop of this size."
