Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

All,

Good suggestion from Andy to check task manager to see what level of CPU activity and then maybe look at processes to see which ones might be driving usage...

I also appreciate the 20175 number posted, but if you can check the bottom of the system and look for P/N 59xxxx and let us know what that 59 number is.  We would like to confirm (sounds like they are) that these are all the same model.

If you could also PM me the serial number, it would help.   This may help us find similar systems here for test.

Thanks

Mark

P/N: 59340248

When I woke it up this morning I quickly started the task manager and saw CPU usage around 40%, which then dropped off to 2-6% after about 30 seconds.  There were a bunch of processes involved in making the CPU usage 40%, but I didn't see this WMI Provider Host one doing anything.  If I sit and don't do anything, HWMonitor takes about 2%, task manager less than 1%, and chrome also less than 1%.  Occasionally some "Service Host: ..." things pop up, mostly network-related.  Hardly anything for the computer to do!

It was colder this morning as I started it up, but the fan still came on at around 38C.  I let it do its wakeup routine and didn't press anything.  Then a few seconds later things went down to 36C and the fan turned off, amazingly!  Now with some very light usage, it's hovering around 40-42C and the fan is running.  All of these temperatures are approximate averages of the things HWMonitor is telling me.

There are two yogas in my household, and both have the same symptoms, and both have the same P/N.

I'll PM you my serial number.

Thanks!

Im new to the yoga and lenovo products, but is the fan suppose to be dead silent? The laptop Im replacing has the fans running as long as its on, as well as the new Lenovo. I think all intel cpus have fans that run all the time.

Mine is quieter than the previous laptop so I never gave it much thought.

Having the same issue on the Yoga I purchased yesterday. As soon as I took it out of the box and turned it on the fan came on immediately. PN 50340248. Model is 20175

CPU only running about 4 to 6%. I really like the Yoga but the fan is really annoying and isn't helping the battery life.

battery life is actually not related to the fan speed

I'm having the exact same issue. The instant I turn on or open the computer, the fan starts and doesn't stop. I've checked CPU speeds, and they don't seem to have any effect on it. P/N 59340248

All,

I looked at a Yoga yesterday and found that the fan started up about 20-30 secs after it booted up and seemed to maintain a low and (fairly quiet) constant speed even as I watched some youtube videos.   In my office, I can hear the fan is only when I hold it up near my ear, but we have a lot of people in open office landscape, so there is background noise of the AC / Heat and conversations and I wouldn't otherwise notice the fan.

It might sound different in your environment.

We are shaing all the information provided so far (thanks!) with our technical teams to check on the expected fan operation.

Mark

Thanks, Mark.  I realize testing in an office is convenient, but a lot of us use our laptops at home in very, VERY, quiet settings.  My house is so quiet that I can hear people talking across the street with the doors and windows closed, so the fan becomes a prominent noise easily.  Strangely, my office is also very quiet--sometimes we open windows just to get some extra white noise in the room!

My old Samsung laptop's fan is nearly constantly on also, but it has a very low setting that sounds like no more than a gentle breeze.  It is hardly audible in even a quiet space.

The Yoga's fan is obviously not audible in coffee shops or other places where there is significant white noise, perhaps like your office environment.  I encourage you to have a quiet room to do testing in, to simulate our livingroom/bedroom experiences.  Any by quiet room, I mean a room where you can hear your own ears ringing more than anything else.  Imagine watching a movie on this beautiful screen and encountering a tender quiet moment, only to be greeted by fan noise!  : \

Thanks again!
