Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

My sense is that it is the fan assembly  - the Twist suffers from the same issue. I bet they have the same fan manufacturer.

Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

2013-02-05, 14:34 PM

Hello everyone,

Unfortunately, here I am, posting on the forum because of the Fan Noise... I have read the whole thread and I do appreciate Lenovo Support (Mark, INIT and Bloo) and concern over this matter.

If I understood correctly there are 2 main reasons :

1) The full speed fan (a fix by Lenovo on the BIOS will soon get a fix here but will bring some additional heat - up to user's choice)

2) The fan blades scratching the surrounding hardware of the Fan Assembly : a manufacturing defect on some units only.

For this last case, Lenovo Support recommended servicing my Yoga 13.

As I am concerned by this last item I would like to know how to do this ? Should I call Lenovo Support France ? Should I call the retailer I bought the Yoga from ? The thing is I would like someone who knows about this problem to take care of it as I do not want to experience the same issue as others in this forum where their Yoga was exchanged vs a unit who suffered from the same thing a few days later... The retailer will know nothing about it.

Thank you Lenovo Support for your answer.

PS : I am located in Paris, France

Hey Cyrrhus,

I don't know if calling Lenovo will do any good. I calles Lenovo Poland (cuz I live in Poland of course), and they told me that only in case the fan makes somesuspicious sounds - I can give it for guarantee repairs, but the case that its simply loud is concidered as this machine "normal performance".

Its really great that they will issue this fan speed update.

All the best, Jacek.

Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise -

2013-02-07, 15:46 PM
Hi,

my story with Lenovo - the short version: on the 13th of January  I bought a Lenovo Yoga 13 from a local retailer; on the 22nd of January I called the service center and informed them about a strange  metallic noise coming from the inside of the laptop. I assumed - reading this forum - that the noise is coming from one of the fans. They issued the service order no. 7020344884 and the laptop " flew" to Poland for repairs. They promised that this operation will take 5-7 days.
After 7 days I asked ( by e mail) when will I receive my laptop; the answer: " the legal term for returning your laptop is 15 days, you are only in the 7th!"  Ok, ok,  the 7th, but WHEN? answer: for further information you can call us on .....   Sorry, no call, this time I want  your statement to be recorded , so, again, WHEN? no answer. I sent again an e mail, instructing them to return my laptop, repaired or not,  not later then 7 days from that particular moment.

After 15 days I asked again " what about my laptop, WHEN will you return it?";   answer: for any information you can call us on ....  .  No Sir, no calls, write something, please. So - when? Shocking answer: Dear Sir, we have new information concerning your laptop: the laptop is in our service center, but we don't have spare parts at the moment" Wow! In your service center?! Really ?This can be a breaking news...  I asked again the same silly question " when ?", and i received the same smart answer: for further information you can call us.
This answers, the fact the nobody from Lenovo bothered to inform me about the status of the repairs and the fact the Lenovo disregarded my instruction to return my laptop - all this forced me to read the law : maximum term for repairs is 15 calendaristic days; if not, I can ask for my money back and compensation for all the trouble caused.
Certainly I'll do that, in the court of law.
I really think that this machine is a good one, but the customer service is very poor - at least here, in Romania.
Sorry, but ..no more Lenovo.

Dziekuje barzo Jacek... As you, I really like this machine so I am about to send the Laptop on warranty repair and given the story just posted above by adrian_p for warranty repair, I am about to live an amazing experience...

My yoga will be checked for :

- fan mechanical noise

- screen autot rotation function not working properly (another post in this forum is dedicated to it)

- weak wifi connection & untimely disconnections

Anyway, as I said, I am giving Lenovo a chance because they were smart enough to have a good idea which has been spoiled by bad quality checkson production line, not enough testing (it took all of us at most 3 days of use to experience these issues) and a incredibly poor Customer Support. I am actually amazed that none of the specialised press reviews have mentioned these issues... Did they handle the yoga for 10mn only ?

So, last chance. If they do not get it right I'll get reimbursed by my retailer and get the Asus Zenbook Touch UX31A-C4027H  13.3. Less inovating design but more robust quality and testing....

Despite a lot of people saying that they have problems I want to say that I don't have any. My wifi signal is strong enough at least for home use and the notebook does not have any fan problems.

BUT the fan is not quiet. At least in quiet rooms you can clearly hear the sound ! I hope that the patch reduces the sound by at least half and I would be fine. Nevertheless I don't bother that much anyway as I always use headphones.

Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

2013-02-08, 17:21 PM

Just got my Yoga 13 yesterday. Set it up watching Downton Abbey with it resting on my lap. By the end of the episode my leg was uncomfortably hot. Is this normal? I've not even added any software. I was just setting up, removing some bloatware adding a few apps etc. No multi-tasking, no email, nothing.

So what's the deal with the heat? Anything anyone can suggest.

It's a LAPtop and I want to use it on my lap without singeing my hairy legs!

The fan isn't noisy. I can hear it, but I was shocked it was on ALL the time. I'm typing this on my Toshiba Portege that has never had any fan/heat problems.

Any insight would be gratefully received. (Don't get too technical though! ;-))

Has anyone experimented with laptop coolers underneath the Yoga? Just wondering if it would cause the Yoga fan to turn off. The cooler's fan sound would probably be quieter since it's usually massive compared to any inside a laptop.

With my new i7 I only get noticeable fan noise in the rare cases of using it in the middle of deep charging (not just being plugged in). This seems reasonable in my warm environment, and I don't want any patch that warms it more.

Yes, that may occur to you and that's the reason why they don't want to give up onto backwards "patching" as I would call it. So anyone who does not mind the fan noise can be fine with it like it is now. I would be fine with that 90% of the time as I am mostly wearing headphones anyway. But sometimes I just need it to be quiet ;) I had a Samsung 540 before and it did not fire up the fans at any time I was doing some easy tasks like browsing the web and having a few documents here and there watching videos.
