Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

2013-02-10, 20:24 PM

Hi, I must share one information with you, I don't know if its ture or not, but when I was buying my yoga in Poland, the computer store guy told me to order the silver one for tomorrow, instead of buying one of the orange ones, that was in store, he told me that the silver ones were produced later and some bugs has been fixed.

I bought the silver one i5 / 128gb /8gb, and the fan is working all the time, I can hear it from a 2 metres distance in a quiet room, but I have no week wi-fi, no "strange noises" and other problems that you write about, so now I Wonder - are your yogas orange?

Hi elm13,

My Yoga is the same as yours : silver, i5, 8Gb, 128Gb SSD.
P/N : 59355935
Model : 2191
Manufactured 06 dec 2012

I just sent it back to Lenovo for repair under warranty for :
- fan mechanical scraping noise
- display auto rotation failure in tent mode (even stock McAfee Metro app was not detecting the tent mode)
- weak Wi-Fi

If they don't get it right I'm returning it to buy the Asus Zenbook Touch 13.3

My silver one was produced on 4. December and has no flaws as far as I can tell. My fan is also "loud" but that seems normal.

I bought a orange Yoga (256GB/8MB/i7 version) in Denmark 2. february. There was a destinct, and very annoying, whining noise (coil whine?). The fan noise was also pretty horrific, it sounds like the fan is running at full power all the time.

I sent the laptop back, and am avaiting a solution to both problems.

As I have read, lots of Yogas has the whine but all has the Fan problem (full power at all times) ?

Please, keep us posted in this thread if anybody discovers any new information.

Regards

John

I had basically this issue and in looking around the power settings I found that the default (balanced) power settings has passive cooling when not plugged in.  I think what happens is that by default the fan is off when unplugged, but once it gets to be too hot the computer freaks out because it's worried it will start melting at the fan starts blowing really loudly.  By changing that setting to active I'm much happier with the fan noise and heat.

So anyone who does not mind the fan noise can be fine with it like it is now. I would be fine with that 90% of the time as I am mostly wearing headphones anyway.

BTW, if you wear headphones because of the superior sound, take a look at your Dolby settings. If you adjust the onboard speaker settings to match the fancy headphone settings, it will sound great.. esp in tablet mode. Also may want to tweak balance in something like smart audio. I can rarely resist kicking off the free version of spotify and playing its radio against an existing playlist called Cuban Masters... fan noise, what fans?

There are a solution ? I have still 3 day for return my yogo and be repaid. The noise is really unbearable. For 1400€ the ultrabook it's unforgivable. My friends asked me if I advise them, my answer is no if there is no solution for noise.

Actually I wear them because I am mostly at locations where I can't use the speakers. And I never used them since I bought the Yoga. I have no idea how they sound but I guess they will be fine :)

Thanks for your information. I might give it a go later ;)

The i5 version is available in the exact same price for the 3317u (1.7GHz) and the 3337u (1.8GHz) processors. Would it matter any to go with the slower one in terms of heat and fan noise?
