Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

Thanks bloo, I would rather have a good algorithm than a bad one :), but maybe you can give us the option in the BIOS (always on - or algorithm)? or is that not a possibility?

Hi Bloo - thanks for the update. I used to have a Sony Viao Z series laptop that had a physical switch that allowed selection of low and high performance modes. Is there any chance of implementing something similar in software for the Yoga?

Alright, it's the end of February which means it's time for an update.

Quick version: I'm expecting a ~two week delay.

Longer version: We're still fine tuning the fan algorithm.  In its current state in the new EC, fan speed fluxuation due to temperature instability is too frequent.  Even if the top end dBA is lower, frequent changes are, in my opinion, even more annoying than constantly too loud.

For those of you remaining patient, thank you for your patience while we work through this.  For those of you who have given up, I apologize we weren't able to get this worked out as quickly as you'd have liked.

Its good that you guys are trying to fix the problem, but it has been ~5 months since this was released. I'm not trying to be demanding, but as others have said, this problem just doesn't happen on other ultrabooks. Forget ultrabooks, it doesn't even happen on a $300 acer netbook!

It's not that I cant buy it again, its that its been so long since this was released and still no update. This problem was first noted literally the day it came out, so that's not an excuse.

This will probably be useless to you guys, but on most laptops, I've seen the threshold for the fan is around 50 degress Celsius. The fans come on at a really low rpm at around 45 and then fully kick in at around 55. Since this has two fans, I assume one can turn on at 45 and the other can turn on at 55. At 60 degress, they should both be on at full rpm, no sooner.

Hey guys while we wait for an update why don't you post videos of your noisy yoga? It would allow us to compare the different noises and see whether or not they are all the same. It would also give the people who are thinking of getting this laptop an idea of what to expect.

PS: Has anyone tried this fix yet?

And also could you record the noise for a minimum of 1 minute just so that others can listen to it properly. :smileyhappy:

Word!!!
I dont know why the Lenovo Support takes so long to write a fan algorithm. Srsly what algorithm should that be? I study computer science and I never heard of a real algorithm just to control the fan speed. This is only a few lines of code.

Its like most other support service. They tell you that they will fix it and 2 weeks later on the day of the actual release they tell you that you have two wait again.

In mid of march we will get told that they need two more weeks.

Maybe you better give us an interface we can use to manipulate the fan speed like we want. I give a ***** of your algorithms.
1600€ laptop shouldnt be louder than my hair dryer.

Really disapointing. Seems like the lenovo support is not really exisiting. I'm following this thread now since january and everything the "support team" wrote are excuses. I don't know that much about how long it takes to write a program or algorithm to fix that, but the priority to solve this issue can't be that high to lenovo if there is still no result after such a long time. By now I begin to regret that I didn't return it. Besides the fan it is a nice laptop, but when I just open a pdf and it sounds like a sawmill thats just not acceptable at this price.

Hello, i have returned my yoga 1 hour a ago and bought the samsung series 9.

Seems like the support team need some months longer to fix this (litte) problem. And i am waiting already about 2 weeks and the other people are waiting longer. Its really disapointing.

bye bye and much luck.

Do a product recall and change those fans!

I purchased my yoga just a couple weeks ago and I'm having a huge fan noise problem.

The fan turns on instantly as soon as I power on this device...is that suppose to happen?

Is it suppose to be loud when only doing minimal activities like browsing the web or using word processor?
