Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

2012-10-31, 22:41 PM

I just bought the Yoga from Best Buy. I noticed the louder than normal fan as well hence I found this thread. I'm more concerned about the trackpad issue which is going in another forum.

The computer does run a little warm and the fan a little loud compared to my ThinkPad.

Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

Hello again. I Am trying to find a software that monitors the fan speed. But none works on windows 8. I was gonna install windows xp. Just to see if the software is going to work.

I also have Mac book air which runs hotter than yoga 13.

Mac book air runs at 53c and no fan noise at all. When I watch YouTube video it stars to scream. But when I work on excel or surf on web. It s silent. U can not hear in a library. And it runs aroun 53 c degree when I am just surfing and doing office.

Let s come yoga 13. It runs around 45-48 c degree. When surfing and doing office. Noticeable distracting noise.

When watching YouTube videos it goes up to 55 c degree. It doesn't scream but. Get s little bit louder than idle.Quiter than Mac book air.

So I am assuming it s something related to fun speed adjustment. As I see on Mac book air. We don't need loud fans when it s on idle or when we are doing simple things like of

In some Macbook, the fan is turned off until the temp reaches a high level. So there is a trade-off between the fan noise and temperature.

Some users will probably want more control over the fan speeds, and there is speedFan but I doubt it will work with Yoga. Another way is through setting the fan speeds in BIOS but it is not for everyone. Or maybe lenovo will update BIOS soon to increase the granularity in the fan speeds.

Unfortunately, speedFan doesn't work.  The software runs but will not detect any fans.

Looking at every option in the BIOS, I see nothing related to fan speed.

I think it's due to thermal policy, they turn on fan on 3x degree by design that may be a little too low. You who need higher turn-on-degree may be informed to update your EC firmware in future.

WMI for me runs at around 3% down to 1.5% most of the time.  Still annoying though.  Whats causing it to run anyways?

To stop WMI use notepad to create a bat file using the foloowing command. mine doesnt have WMI cpu usage anymore but. Fan noise still keeps going on. Here is the command to stop WMI. And You may have to run bat file as  admin.

net stop "IP Helper"
net stop "Security Center"
net stop "VMware Authorization Service"
net stop "Windows Management Instrumentation"
net start "Windows Management Instrumentation"
net start "Security Center"
net start "IP Helper"
net start "VMware Authorization Service"

Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

I have TWO significant observations...

FIRST, the Yoga I looked at, picked up, touched, man handled in BESTBUY was SILENT! The HX with Beats ultrabook was very very warm + loud fan (even over the white noise in BB) and SAMSXX ultrabook was cooler than the HX and I heard NO fan noise.  ALL THREE of these have the same core specs (i5 CPU Model 3317 with 4GB of RAM)

SECOND, my Yoga was silent for the first (out of the box) 15 minutes. From that point forward, the fan is ALWAYS on when it is on/in use.

Unit Info:

Bios: 66CN48WW

Model # 20175

Part # 59340248

@ idle....CPU between 4-7% clocked at 0.78GHz

WHIPRVse.eve CPU @ 7% with 4.5MB of RAM

TEMPS

TZ01 Low = 38 C, High = 58 C

CORE 0 Low = 38 C, High = 58 C

CORE 1 Low = 32 C, High = 59 C

SamsXXg HD Low = 30 C, High = 40 C

I will PM my serial.  Since the unit in Bestbuy ran SILENT for the entire 30 min I used it (played local MP3, video clip a few times, explored Metro err W8 interface, explored Desktop interface, opened and close lid 2x no more than 2 seconds (no real cool down time)

If that unit can run silent, I would like mine to be silent. This combined with the overly mushy keyboard...(BESTBUY unit keyboard key travel much firmer, not stuck/just more tension) I will have to return for the Sammy (lower res screen : ( but 150.00 less.  My 2008-2009 ACXR Timeline (first gen of the line) runs TOTALLY silent. Yes it has a single core CPU with DVD and much better frame plus 2.1lbs. Come on, a premium unit commanding premium price has a fan running ALL THE TIME?

I am seriously regretting my purchase!
