Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

I live in Finland and the store wont accept taking my Yoga back, not even for store credit. Is there anyone within Lenovo I can contact for this? Tired of the constant fan noise.

If Lenovo is not willing do anything about this problem then maybe their developers can help write a profile for Yoga in fan speed aplication. Few people mentioned on this forum application which can change fan speed. Yoga right now is not supported. Maybe somebody at Lenovo can contact author of this app to create Yoga profile. At least Lenovo can do something. RIght now I am so pissed that I pay big money and I got faulty product (such noise in high end procucts is not acceptable, when you only browsing with flash disabled then ultrabook should be silent). I would return it, but in my country this is not possible :(

FYI I installed new bios, disabled bluetooth, uninstalled antyvir, unistalled crappy lenovo apps, so I have very low cpu load. Anyway when I am browsing: I just scrolled the page then fans started. What is that? I just scrolled then page once and was continue reading it. Cpu temperature didn't increased by it!

Another example. I am using google maps with street view. When I am moving via street fans are starting high rpms, after 1 seconds moving is finished and fans are slowing down. I am moving again, fans are crazy for one seconds, then again and again. What is that? Is temperature increased during this 1 seconds? Why fans depends on 1 seconds cpu usage. This should be depends on temparature and heavy cpu usage when is longer than 5

Yeah, I've disabled everything I can think of, and the fans STILL turn on before doing anything from a deep S4 sleep state.

So... looks like aftermarket fix is in order.

What most of us are looking for is a way to keep the fans from running when not necessary, but allow them to cool when needed.  Apparently Lenovo has given up on what should be a very simple programing task.  And we appear to be locked out of doing our own programing fix.

What does that leave us with?  A hardware fix.  Unfortunately this would not be adjustable easily.  I'm not sure how to manage a workaround to adjust - but possibly we could intercept one of the USB ports and write a stand alone program to use the USB to run the fan?

A hardware fix could look something like this:  Double connector that is male and femal to clip into the factor fan connectors and pigtail out the wires so we can intercept the signal.  Then we use a thermistor placed near or on the heat sink, a micro FET to control the fan speed, resistors, and a bypass capacitor and we can have continuously variable fan speed that only turns on when needed.  For a few $ anyone who has a basic understanding of electical engineering can apparenly do what Lenovo cannot.    I just bought my Yoga 13.  We'll see how much it annoys over the next few weeks.  If it really sucks, I'll probably go with this fix.  Simple, easy, cheap, and functional. Only trick is to squeeze it all in, so it'll have to be small.

At $20 a pop, sounds like you got yourself a nice little business plan, considering the longevity of this thread and worldwide distribution.  And, you know what, if major blogs get wind of your little venture, you have all to benefit, and the giant Lenovo may get some further bad press out of this for not listening to their customers.

As as far as little ole me is concerned, I've found a replacement.  A 1200 euro machine that sounds like a little dustbuster is outrageous.

Hi to All,

i have had the rattling noise - that i temporarily fixed by creating a small gap between blades and case...

However, i still feel that the fan is too noisy...i can hear the noise of the fan from 2 meters away...

IS THIS NORMAL? IS YOUR SYSTEM SO LOUD TOO?

Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

Yes pzucchel,

The fan is too loud and runs too often.  Fans will inherently make some noise.  That's life.  The problem with this product is that Lenovo skipped the phase of design where they thought "hey, maybe we should think about programming the fan controller to be variable speed and fluctuate based on the temperature of the heat sink."   It's completely undersandable because Lenovo hasn't ever made a computer before.  And hiring a programmer to spend 30 minutes writing an algorythm for this is expensive.  Since this isn't a flagship product, they just couldn't justify the additioanl $.05 per unit.

The reality is Lenovo wen't super cheap on the fan controller.  Rather than opting for variable speed they have a two speed controller, and they apparently can't figure out how to run the two speed fans based on thermal output.  So you get a fan that turns on and runs all the time.  The nice thing is that this isn't a device that you'd want to maximize battery life - so running a fan all the time is no problem.  And they used loud fans because they are $.25 cheaper and they'll make sure to let you know when they are running.  It's like a nice little reminded that your computer is turned on.

Seeing how Lenovo consider their customers,  this is my First Lenovo, and my last Lenovo !!

the yoga is nice, work well, but i really don't undersand why Lenovo don't resolve this easy problem !! make the fan start if the cpu load is more than 10% for more 10 seconds and the problem is solved !!! Is it really impossible ??!!

the support try to say that the fans always on for more life of the yoga.... Are you serious ?? the other ultrabook don't have the fan always on and work very well !!

i have the luck to not have wifi problem,

This is what i say here, and what i say in other french forum ! don't buy Lenovo cause there is no support at all !
