Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

" Sorry, you can't use *** in your login name. Please choose a different login name. "

Seriously? It's part of my family name!!

Anyway, I also have the fan noise issue. I would be interested what fan controller Lenovo uses here, as with lm_sensors and pwmconfig Linux could pretty much fix this issue. Win8 is seriously broken anyway.

The BIOS update helped a bit, but the fans are still noisy. It's not the sound of the air, but a metalish sound from the fan bearings I guess. Bad quality fans or mounting issue. If I push the righ handside of the bottom of the notebook (where the Windows sticket is, at least on my device), the noise looses its high pitch edge... did anybody look into that?

BTW, the noise radiates towards me from the keyboard. It's much quieter in table form, so it's pretty much some bad design there.

I am waiting for the final 3.10 Linux kernel that will probably handle the WiFi chip. In the meantime, does anybody know the type of the sensor/pwm controller IC in this thing?

My Yoga 13 is running with a toothpick stuck in the fan, 4 seconds job, and is completely silence. Just as you wrote, a few degrees higher.

You must have smaller toothpicks, because mine don't fit.

Better answer:  Take a small size paperclip.  Bend into a narrow "U" shape.  Slide in such that the bend in the "U" goes around a fin.  That way it's easy to remove.  Just hook the bend with another paperclip and pull it back out.  Toothpicks can be hard to pull back out.

DELL XPS 12

2013-06-06, 8:03 AM

I bought Yoga 13 some weeks ago, best Laptop ever!

except: HORRIBLE FAN NOISE

So I returned yoga and took a Dell XPS 12 > most of the time ABSOLUTLY QUIET

The convertible-mechanism is not nice as yoga, but the stillness is invaluable

Thank You God For Dell XPS 12 :)

PS:

the caveat / special version EC blah blah > faaaar from satisfactory

I have the exact opposite of your problem... I can't hear my fan at all, not sure if it is even working.

Re: Yoga 13 Fan Noise

Hi there.  I've read through much of this thread, and installed the custom EC as described.  I've also unstailled bloatware, and tried changing power settings.  The EC hardly did anything.

I'm just left a simple question: do all Yoga 13 models have the constantly running fan?  Is that "by design"?

If so, asking it replaced wont change a thing.. /:

The machine makes as much noise at idle as my old MacBook made when working really hard.  Its difficult seeing myself with this machine in meetings, study halls and libraries given the fan activity.  None wants to be the guy in the meeting with the noisy machine. Even if it wasn't constant, you sort of expect and ultrabook to run totally quiet these days.  I get sad thinking I might have to return this, as it is such a wonderful machine in every other respect.

Does anyone know if the yoga 11s has the same problem with the fan noise?

I don't mind the noise most times, but in small meetings it drives me nuts.

And we all talking only about browsing and excel, when noise is uncomfortable. Anyone tried run some D3D apps? I tried, and I am not talking about any game, just simple 3d app from DirectX SDK. OMG! Serously this Yoga utrabook is louder than my washing mashine, and I am not joking :( My nine friends wanted to buy yoga but when I show them then all bought something else.

BTW anyone tried to disable anti malware from windows defender?  When you do nothing then scanning kick in and running at full cpu speed. When I am back to doing something then antimalware stops but yoga is sooooooooooooooooooo hooooooooooot and noisy after this that is very uncomfortable to use. In win7 you can disable scanning when idle, but I coudnt find it in win8. In win8 you can only disable whole windows defender. But I want to use defender to scan files which I am downloading, I dont want scanning hard drive when laptop is in idle.
