I tested if the not-recharging and unauthorized battery were connected, and they are. My battery was not charging. Then i tested the draining and it works. The Lenovo energy management program has in the middle Battery panel a Battery Information button. Before draining i clicked it, and the Battery Status was "unauthorized battery". Then i disconnected mains, drained the battery and reconnected power. After that the battery was charging, and the Battery Status was now "good".

I have a dreadful feeling that we have stumbled to the actual reason why Lenovo has not fixed the fan. They couldn't because the fix triggered battery DRM check, and the battery department refused to fix their program. Or their budget won't allow changes until next year, and fan department is low on their priority.
Oh dear...

@llamaman      How's 8.1 running so far? Does everything work properly including all the drivers? I tried it before, but the trackpad scrolling was so bad that I had to go back to 8. I know 8.1 is working great on my surface rt, but not sure if it has the drivers needed for this laptop. Have you experienced the same thing, or did I just have the wrong drivers?

@richardver NFBC is only writing into two registers which are for nothing else than controling the fan speed.

If this is, what makes the battery charging system go crazy, which apparently is, then there's some bad code from either Lenovo or Microsoft. That's what I think.

I follow the discussion here and currently I use revised EC (42) and bios (55). I was using NBFC but after reading about problems with batteries I have decided not to use it anymore. This is just a hypothesis, if the battery gets to hot it may stop working properly. Yoga may need fans running to keep the battery temperature down. It could be a software issue and a proper update of something will fix it in the future. Or if NBFC checked other temperature sensors it would solve the problem. But I could be totally wrong.

Hi all,

Before And_yoga discovered the right EC settings for controlling the fans, I played around with NBFC and the EC editor to try to find the right EC settings myself. Finding the right settings is kind of trial & error because Lenovo doesn't provide any documentation how the EC works.

In the proces of trial & error I noticed that you can make your Yoga behave really weird by editing EC values (like keys not working anymore, disabling touchpad, to the point my Yoga wouldn't soft restart anymore). It is not for nothing NBFC puts a big disclaimer in his manual that you can break things with this software ;)

I think there is nothing wrong with the Lenovo software or OS, I just think fiddling around with EC values is tricky business. For now I keep using NBFC because it works good enough and I can live with the problems it creates.

Great fix for the fan however having the battery not charging issue.  I've seen where people reference "flashing the EC" in this thread but I can't find that in this multi page thread.  Anyone have a link for how to get the battery back charing again?  Thanks a bunch!

@ktabel01,

1. run your battery down to 0

or

2. reflash ec: download ec & instructions here

Thank you for the link.  I've tried running it to zero and it didn't help.  It initially started charging then got to 60% and I got the plugged in and not charging message.

Then tried flashing and i'm stuck at FreeDOS loading.  This is beyond frustrating.  Any other options?  Wish I would have just put up with the fan noise

Uninstalled Lenovo energy management and at the moment is at 60% but now says charging.  Fingers crossed.

I think you have changed battery mode to 'Optimized Battery Health',
changed it back to 'Maximum Battery Life', in the middle red panel of the Energy Management. Then you can charge to 100%.

Works for me. :)
