Re: Yoga 13 Lag After updating to Windows 8.1

2013-10-28, 14:05 PM

I wasn't able to install the Intel DPTF Driver for the Yoga 2. It was dated 10-16-13 so I'm assuming that's the same one you were talking about?

I get an error stating "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software."

That's the error you get if you switch off DPTF in the BIOS. I think you have to first enable it in the BIOS, then Windows will let you install it. WIth it disabled in the BIOS, Windows doesn't think your computer is capable of using it.

I tried several versions of DPTF, and ended up installing the 10/16 version (just to be current), then disabling in the BIOS. I await guidance or updates from Lenovo...

Re: Yoga 13 Lag After updating to Windows 8.1

2013-10-28, 15:21 PM

I think I can be quite helpful here (after much effort and experimenting).  I have a very early Yoga 13 and had similar issues with my first attempt to install Windows 8.1.

There could be any of the following four issues affecting your Windows 8.1 update (from my experienc):

1) the one that you mentioned.  The SWUSB.exe error.  That is caused by the new Windows 8.1 Wireless/Lan drivers that the Windows 8.1 update installs.  Go back the to the 8.0 drivers and the issue will go away.  If you want proof, run msconfig and disable SWUSB in the Details Tab.  The error will disappear.  I decided to go old driver versus disabled SWUSB.exe

2)  Go to XBox Video and try to run a movie tralier.  If the movie video is all screwed up, your Yoga 13 doesn't like the new graphics that the Windows 8.1 update installs.  Go back to the drivers posted at the Lenovo site even though they are much older.

3)  The two unknown devices in the Device Manger can be solved by reinstalling (as opposed to turning off as some post suggested) the current driver at the Lenovo site.

4)  If sound problem, try to open recording devices in the sound in taskbar tray.  The first time, it will give an error message about can't deal with some enhanced sound and asked to be disabled.  Say, yes.

I hope my cockiness is justified.  So far, my system has been stable for several days of all of these errors.  I actually got one first install of Windows 8.1 to NOT give error 3) above but the rest were repeated in all attempts to install the update.

small correction:

I did not complete one sentence for the two unknown devices.  You should run the MSFT Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework driver update from the Lenovo site.  I believe this one was the same version but nonetheless, repaired the problem.

Re: Yoga 13 Lag After updating to Windows 8.1

Recently updated my Windows Yoga 13 to Windows 8.1

Windows 8 was awesme; but being on 8.1 all week has been painful!
*computer feeling slow and laggy
*scrolling in browser seemed choppy
*had to constantly touch screen to get "click" recognized
*opening programs, windows, etc all lagged and feeled slow
*etc

This was very frustrating, until i recently found a fix that fixed these problems. it was hard to find so i wanted to share.

Solution: turn off (disable) DPTF in BIOS (Intel Dynamic Process and Thermal Framework).
1. Shutdown laptop
2. There is a small dot button next to power button, use this to turn on (important)
3. Then on load, press F2
4. a menu will appear, choose BIOS
5. Go to second tab, option is toward bottom.... disable it
6. exit with saves

Once back in windows, it will run like Windows 8 use to. Why? Not sure, possibly a driver issue that is not addressed yet. (today is oct 29, 2013)

Also, after initial 8.1 update my audio was gone (grr) -- errors like "audio service cannot initialize"; I has to uninsatll audio drivers and download new ones off lenovo site and reinstall.

I can verify this procedure. Had to do the exact same thing to my yoga 13. Performance was so bad that I nearly trashed the machine and went out to buy something new. Should not be this difficult to find soutions to somethinng that Lenovo most likely knows is an issue. Lenovo, just let us know what the known issues are and an update on when you expect to have it resolved. that's all we ask!

Yes, I did this and it works...for the time being. I also agree with the sentiment--I had to look all over for a solution to this problem, and I pity those that suffer through weak performance without doing a thing to cause it.

What does the thermal framework driver do, exactly? What am I losing by being forced to delete it?

I didn't delete or disable the "thermal".  I reinstalled using the Windows 8 driver (not 8.1) from the site and it solved the issues without a disable.

I did try installing the driver saved on my Win8 recovery partition, but it did not help (11s). i cant remember if i tried grabbing the Win8 driver from the support site; maybe that one is different.

There is also an updated DPTF software for Windows 8.1 available from the Lenovo Yoga 2 support download page that works just fine on the Yoga 13....might want to give it a try and see if it helps.
