Yoga 13 loses 25% of battery capacity in 10 months

2013-11-05, 20:49 PM

Hi,

I have owned a yoga 13 since January, which I'm quite happy with apart from some well-known problems (fan noise and weak wi-fi).

I have however observed an abnormally high rate of maximum battery capacity loss. This is the battery capacity history report since I first got the machine:

Link to picture

You will notice that today (November 2013) the full charge capacity of the 54 mWh battery is only 41 mWh, which is a 24% loss over 10 months.

This seems a bit excessive to me, and it also renders my Yoga less useful: it now lasts about 4 hours at best, instead of the 5:30 is used to last when it was new.

Is this normal or something that would call for a warranty repair?

If it's normal, does anybody know where I can get a replacement battery in Europe? Local lenovo rep wasn't much help...

Thanks for the help,

Spyros

Dear preem_palver

Can you try doing the battery gauge reset from the energy management software

Thanks

I have quite similar problem. It looks like my battery is down to 90% when fully charged. Firstly I thought that because of some glitch within power management, the battery cannot be charged to 100% anymore.

But after I tried to reinstall everything and problem was still the same I decided to boot linux live distro to see how the battery behaves. It's exactly the same and charging never goes over 90% although the yoga is still saying "charging"

So I lost 10% of battery capacity just in 7 months since I bought my yoga, that's insane moreover my bttery indicator is broken and never displays 100%.

I had the same problem with my machine with mine being unable to charge past 90% and always displaying  "charging". Unfortunately you will not be able to run the battery gauge reset from the energy management software since you wont be able to charge to 100%. I also ran ubuntu to see if it was a bug with windows 8 but unfortunately I still wasnt able to charge past 90

Luckily lenovo has a 1 year battery exchange so if you call them or bring it back to where ever you purchased the laptop from, they will ship it off and replace the battery for free

Cheers

Hello again Semayan,

after the battery gauge reset I got the following results:

battery status in Lenovo Energy Management is again listed as "Good"

Windows now reports that the maximum capacity of the battery is 46 mWh.

This is a slight improvement, but 46 mWh at maximum still represents a 15% capacity loss over 10 months of use.

Do you consider this a normal drop?

I would also still like to know if I can get the battery replaced under warranty, or if I can purchase an official battery in Europe and do the swap on my own.

@Others,

I do not experience the problem you are describing (battery only charging to 90%). In order to take a look at the maximum reported capacity of the battery (along with other useful stats) you must issue from the command line:

powercfg /batteryreport

and an html file will be generated in the current path

Re: Yoga 13 loses 25% of battery capacity in 10 months

Hi folks,

I have also a battery problem with 2 month old yoga 13 i7. I have never seen more than 3 hours lifetime even if energy saving options are also to all lows. but i also want today evening with "powercfg /batteryreport" command.

I have seen mostly 2 hours with %100 battery. But internet, read it 9 hours. I think this big gap cannot explained with battery age if it younger than 1 year old.

My special question is: How long minimal battery lifetime at you wenn i set all performance settings to high with maximum screet bightnes?

I have experienced this problem, also. I have owned this laptop since July 3rd 2013, when I bought it new. I had almost identical capacity degrade as the OP, except my fully charged capacity was 56kw which is actually higher than the designed capacity according to Windows report.

Battery_capacity_Yoga13.PNGve

In January 2014 this year, I kept getting reports from battery management that my battery left % was at 7% and to plug in my charger even though the last reported capacity was between 30-40%.  It would drop from 30-40 to 7% which is what prompted me to start reading the battery reports.  This is the lowest I was able to see my battery capacity drop to (41kw) a 25% wear level:

Battery_Wear_25%.PNG

I have tried two Battery Guage resets in Lenovo Power Management as you can see from the first link.  I was able to get my fully charged capacity to go up again (to about 45kw) but then the designed capacity has now dropped to 49kw much like the OP had with his battery.

This seems very high to me for a battery that has only been used 7 months.  The battery "status" in Power Management is still "Good", but I am still getting the sudden jumps in % readings from 30% to 7%.  How do I get this replaced?

Thanks,

smargo
