Yoga 13 onscreen keyboard. Where are the options?

2013-03-08, 5:30 AM

I don't know if Yoga software people ever used android (or even iOS) or if this is a Win8 issue, but unless I'm missing something, the touch keyboard is atrocious.

No option for auto keyboard pop-up when typing in spaces

No longpress for numbers or special characters

No options for key size changes

No keyboards available to purchase on the Win8 app store

No suggestions of alternative spelling or learning

Am I missing something?

This keyboard makes an already heavy and awkward tablet mode a gimmick.

It's a laptop for all intents and purposes. You had to know how large and heavy it would be as a Tablet... right?

Not another kb alternative, but you can go to settings - general- Make the standard keyboard available; turn that on and one of the kb options has the top row of number keys.

Just guessing, but this is probably more win8 issue than Yoga; I'd guess the same kb is on all win8 boxes.  Also, probably just a matter of time b4 devs provide some kb alternatives.  Android's been out there a lot longer; how long was Android around b4 Hackers, Swiftkey, et al were out there.  When (if?) win8 tablets take off there'll be more options.

I've found myself using Yoga as a tablet a lot more than I thought.  I start out in laptop mode; start reading some stuff on the web, and suddenly realize this'd be a lot easier w/o the (physical) kb in the way.  So I flip the thing.  Lot easier if mostly what you're doing is surfing.  If I get somewhere where I need some minor kb input (password; Amazon order e.g.) it's easier to use the soft kb than flip back to laptop.

Otoh; easy enough to go back to laptop to type something more lengthy (like this message).

Great device, the Yoga, imo.

If WinRT can have a pop up keyboard an $1200 laptop can have it too, we're talking simple stuff that has been on Android and iOS for years.

I want to use it in tablet mode as advertised, not as a mobile tablet.

@jboals, thanks for the suggestion, it was somewhat helpful. By the way why would they have a separate option to make the standard keyboard available or unavailable?

@ystasino You'd have to ask Microsoft that question :smileyhappy:.  My 1st Android didn't have it either; my guess was that it was originally for phone, where real estate is much more expensive than a tablet.  Maybe win8 designers were thinking the same thing.

They have the exact same keyboard, but I agree that the Win8 keyboard is seriously lacking.  The only other option I've seen is TouchPal, but I can't get it to work.
