Yoga 13 swap keyboard for models with backlit keyboard?

2012-12-03, 12:40 PM

Current model specs do not offer a backlit keyboard. However, the keyboard is same size/dimensions as other models that have the backlit keyboard.

Does the Yoga have power feed for the backlit cable?  Is it a single cable (power and data) or the usual two cable type (one for power, one for data)?

I can find replacement backlit boards, but don't want to spend the money if I can't get it to work.

Compatible models with backlit KB:
Ideapad Y series models Y400 & Y480
Ideapad Z series models Z400 & Z500

Re: Yoga 13 swap keyboard for models with backlit keyboard?

From what I have seen of the keyboards, those that are backlit have TWO wires/connections.  One is for data, one is for power.  I can tell you for certain, the stock keyboard on the Yoga has a single ribbon connection for data.

The other models of Ideapads have the same dimensions as the Yoga and at least two use the identical key layout as the Yoga.  My thinking was order one online (ebay, Amazon, Lenovo spare parts, etc.) and simply loosen the double sided tape, pop out existing keyboard and insert the backlit one.  The issue is, I need to find out if the Yoga chassis has a power connection (for the backlit).  I am hoping the connection is just there, just unused.

If the power feed is there, or even better should the data ribbon pull power using a single cable, you are set.  Since I returned my Yoga, I can't examine under the keyboard at this time.  I have cheched the ifixit.com site in case a video walk through was added.  As of 12/05/12, there isn't one. That site is great because they do a complete tear down WITH instructions.  In this case, the disasembing of the Yoga would be MINIMAL as it's just tape and pressure clips holding the keybaord in place, and then the clip lock on the ribbon cable.  No screws at all.

I don't want to list where I found the parts or the actual links because the questions have to be answered certain to avoid wasting money. Question 1. Are any of the keyboards from the models I listed originally an exact fit for the Yoga? Question 2. If the backlit keyboard has to ribbon cables (data & power), does the Yoga have a dormant power connection?  The models I examined all share an 84 button keyboard (as the Yoga).

ok like I said I want this laptop so I don't have one yet to check but if they aren't that much when/if I do get this laptop I might try I just wonder if lenovo is going to add a backlight keyboard I think they will make a new model instead of just simply adding a different keyboard like they did with the y470 then the y480 had it(do not know much about it just saw a video and people saying they wanted that feature on the y470)

NYCundrgrnd, COULD you list where you found the spare parts? i've been racking the internet and cannot find any lenovo spare parts aside from some u310 parts in china. I'm curious about the backlit keyboard swap and the only wa to find out may be to waste a little money and get that keyboard..

I'm interested in knowing whether anyone got anywhere with this too. I only want to know if any of these keyboards physically fit the yoga, and work with the yoga's keyboard interface. If so, I'll pick one up and work on getting the backlight to work. I don't want to spend $45 on one just to find out that it doesn't fit.
