Re: Yoga 13 wifi is extremely poor

I can't believe it. I have to use a VPN connection 8-10 hours per day but I cannot connect with the only laptop I have at this moment. I will ask Lenovo if they change it for a thinkpad or I will have to buy a new one for work and use this one as tablet for seeing images.

Thanks.

Re: Yoga 13 wifi is extremely poor

2013-01-27, 7:35 AM

I've been traveling extensively with my new Yoga and I love its versatility and ease of use…but the Wi-Fi performance is nothing short of pathetic.  I have to hold it above my head like a mad man in Airports just to send of a few emails.  Luckily I still have my 3 year old HP because although it is a pain to travel with it can almost without fail can get full strength reception and zero dropouts – I also travel with an iPad, Samsung Galaxy s3 and an old iPhone and these all have no wireless issues.

When the Yoga is right beside the router (literally resting on top of it) there are no dropouts but side by side download comparisons with the HP show it takes 1.5x longer to download the same files.  And regardless of anything I do it can't maintain a VPN connection for more than 3 or 4 mins at a time.  I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling drivers and software...tweaking settings and nothing seems to work.  However uninstalling the Lenovo Energy Management software did seem to improve reliability and oddly improved battery life slightly.  Also disabling Bluetooth seemed to make some difference…but could just be a coincidence.  I’m away from home so I can’t return it to Lenovo easily…but at this stage I’ll be lucky to get it home without smashing it against a wall in frustration.  Bit of feedback from Lenovo would be appreciated.

I've been realizing certain changes in connection speed depending on the kind of router. At home I have both "g" and "n" routers, at a close distance speed seems to be the same,  but after some obstacles like walls and floors the n router works just fine while the g doesnt even load google. I can connect to both routers at long distances but the g router just doesnt seem to respond. Luckily at work and university there are just n routers, but getting connection at other places where there's only g routers its a complete waste of time.

Still waiting for a fix or update on the matter... I was hopping my Yoga 13 to be this year's best buy.

Thanks.

I can't even stream a youtube video in one shot without it stopping to buffer multiple times - that happens only on this $1200 dollar ultrabook, and not on any other device in my household -- absolutely ridiculous!

I had success with these settings:

Go to Realtek properties of your realtek wifi device...

go to advanced bar

set

bandwidth 20Mhz only

selective suspend disabled

selective suspend timeout 60 (although it has probably no effect, as we disabled it totally)

wifi config wifi

I believe the poor wifi signal is due to some power saving regime setting on and off the wifi card constantly...

Now I can get as much as 12Mbit/s from my wifi... before I was about 2-3Mbit... also I had latency around 1s and packet loss about 30%... now I have 3% loss and 5ms latency

I think it's solved for me... I had a similar problem with other wifi card like this one... I'm almost certain it's because of this power saving feature nowadays cards use...

hope this helps ;)) I love my yoga and almost wanted to return it... now I can use it more... ;))

Warp23, I tested your settings and its working way much better now!

I'll be updating its performance in case wifi connection starts dropping again.

Thanks a lot!

I'm surprised your seeing such an increase when lowering from 20Mhz_40Mhz to 20Mhz. I'm at 150Mbps right off the bat, but if I lower to only 20Mhz, it goes down immediately to 58Mbps.

I just made those changes and I still have dropouts. for a second I thought I was good then it froze.

What is really strange is I use the newer drivers on the realtek page. The driver says that although signal strength is 74%, the link quality is 100%. Yet despite a constant link quality of 100%, the connection still drops when the throughput gets high.

I made the changes, but so far i've only tested one router. I'd need to test it on others so that i can say it worked for me.

But it really made a difference in range and speed.

I tested the settings with 20Mhz_40Mhz and the range still works, but with 20Mhz works faster, I can perceive almost 2x difference when Im far from the router.

I still hope for a fix, but right now this settings are good.
