Yoga 2 11 USB boot

Hi,

Please help. I really need to boot my new laptop from a usb disk.

I have managed to set boot mode to legacy support, set USB boot to enabled and turned of Lenovo Fast boot. Unfortunately I am still uable to boot from any usb sources.

When in the boot menu the only boot option is Windows and when in bios there are no legacy devices listed in the boot options screen. I have tried with a number of different usb devices.

Any ideas? Has anyone managed to boot a yoga 2 11 from a usb source?

Thanks for the help.

Re: Yoga 2 11 USB boot

If I recall correctly, you must set the boot to USB as the first device.

Re: Yoga 2 11 USB boot

@Nine, thanks for the link. Unfortunately this link describes a method to boot uefi usb but i would like to boot in legacy mode and run Linux based os. I am assuming this us possible as i have set the bios boot mode to legacy support. The user guide also mentions booting to Linux or pre windows 8 os.

Re: Yoga 2 11 USB boot

Hi cydnax,

Thanks for posting back, Not sure if this would work but in the BIOS, is there anything that says "secure boot". Could you try disabling that ?

Hope to hear back.

Re: Yoga 2 11 USB boot

Hi NINE,

Thanks for the suggestion.

This is a list of what I have managed to do so far:

  • Use Novo button to enter Bios
  • Go to Exit options
  • Select 'Os optimized Defaults' set to 'Other OS'
  • Select Load Default Settings
  • New option now appear in the Bios
  • Go o boot options
  • Set Lenovo Fast Boot to disabled
  • Set Boot Priority to 'Legacy First'

At this point the secure boot setting no longer displays in the security tab.

I would now expect the laptop to seek for a usb device when powered on and attempt to boot. There does not appear to be any interaction with the USB as the normal lights do not flash. Consequently the laptop boots straight to Windows8.

When I use the novo button to enter the boot menu there are no options other than the windows boot menu. In the bios no devices show under the legacy devices heading. So the laptop/bios does not appear to even be recognising a usb device.

Anyother help/suggestions would really be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Yoga 2 11 USB boot

Hey cydnax,

I tkink it's similar situation to Miix 10 (I know you have Yoga 2 11) http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Idea-Windows-based-Tablets-and/Miix-10-Unable-to-boot-from-USB-stick/ta-...

2. Miix10 only supports USB boot by WinPE, the Boot Menu only shows USB device name if and only if that USB device contains WinPE boot up files.

Maybe that's why you don't see USB device on boot list.

I'm still don't understand why Lenovo cut off Legacy Mode from BIOS? NINE?

Re: Yoga 2 11 USB boot

Hi Dom

Since mine has the option to enable legacy boot I would expect there to be a solution or I may have to return it as faulty. The user guide states that it is possible to boot legacy OSes so I expect that to be the case and is a key part of my requirement for a laptop.

I will keep you posted on any progress. I am sure some smart linux hacker will work it out eventually......?

Re: Yoga 2 11 USB boot

At this moment, for me, the User Guide is fake. I look forward to NINE reply.

I think you can expect return Yoga as faulty, inconsistent with the specification.
