Data partition is C:

  • So (re)move all unnecessary data to an external disk
  • Resize (shrink) the C partition
  • Clone all partitions to the SSD
Leave the recovery partition on the HDD, as it will not work on the SSD and save you space on the SSD
  • Remove the HDD and store it to be able to do a recovery in an emergency or sale of the laptop.

A nice 'manual' by Richard the King:

Thanks for helping me out man. Now I got the hdd cloned to ssd, disabled secureboot and booted with the new ssd.

it keeps 'crashing" by flashing the screen to the main desktop every 30 seconds, any reason for that? The new ssd is almost filled with just the windows OS I have only 26 gb left on it.

That 128 GB is not very spacious ...

Start using your private network, cloud services or an SD card for data.

Reinstall your HDD or -if you buy the SATA cable- you could install an extra (cheap) SSD only for 'slow' data;

Install the latest Intel video drivers for the 4400 chipset: v3960

Got a quick question aswell, I upgraded my Yoga 2 13 with a 240GB SSD (cause i got one pretty cheap, otherwise would have opted for less space).
With that 240GB I don't need the other HDD inside, is it possible & worth turning it off? Like either just disconnecting it or completely remove it?
In terms of worth it i mean considering power consumption (and overall weight maybe) or is there hardly any difference?

The extra HDD will bring you:

  • more space for slow storage
  • room to put system backups on and take wherever you go

The extra HDD will costs you:

  • extra energy (about 1W)
switching it off/ sleep mode  if not in use will reduce that
  • extra heat
the fan has to deal with that
  • extra weight  (100g)
  • extra noise
the SSD will make no sound, the HDD will; but there are also your noisy fan(s) ..
  • extra risk
if you crash your SSD due to electronic problems, your HDD might be damaged too and you do not have your backup anymore...

@Mischa: NOW someone tells me about that stupid hdd cable that lenovo never sells, Im afraid I cant return the ssd as I bought it during black friday. Do you think MS can give me a fresh copy of windows 8 if I tell them I swapped out my hdd?

Leason learned always pay more for a laptop with the features you want...

EDIT: Btw, my old Asus had 128gb ssd and with windows installed I still had around 60gb left on it.

I tried both pieces of software that were widely recommended on the Internet to clone / image a drive. Acronis did not pick up all the default partitions (unfortunately Lenovo puts 7 partitions on their drives….crazy I know) on the 128 GB m.2 SSD. Macruim is the software that worked for me

Adding HDD to SSD setup

2015-02-02, 17:43 PM

Hello,

If I understand correctly, much of the discussion on this post has focused on adding an SSD to a Yoga 2 that already has an HDD drive.

My question is: would there be any issues going the other way? The Yoga 2 I'd like to get has a 8Gb RAM/256Gb SSD setup. I'd like to add the WD 500 gb 5mm drive for data storage. I wouldn't need to migrate the system drive or anything like that. Is that possible to do without any complications?
