Re: Yoga 2 13 Internals

Hi

I've just joined the forum, though I've been looking through as many posts as I can.

I have the Yoga2 13, i7, 8GB ram, 500GB HDD with 16GB fast interface, model 20344. It has Windows 8.1 pre-loaded. I would prefer, however, using Windows 7. I have a new Windows 7 disc, and originally I thought I might dual boot the system, but since reading that Lenovo do not recommend this, I thought that perhaps I could install an SSD and load the new OS onto that. So unlike many people here I have no interest in cloning the HDD onto the SSD, but rather, just do a clean install of Windows 7onto the SSD. My current thinking is to use a Samsung EVO850 250GB m2 SATA card, which has been reported in recent posts to work.

In your experience is this a reasonable approach?

I'm a bit vague about issues with UEFI though. I know it is more complex than the standard MBR, but am I likely to run into issues with this? Presumably the new drive has to be recognised by the BIOS before I load the new OS, so what settings should I use please? In order to force the system to load onto the SSD, will I need to disconnect the HDD? Anything else that I need to consider please?

Thanks in advance.

Ian

Can you use any size 850 evo?

Also, has anyone had any luck doing a windows 10/Ubuntu dual boot? I want to do that, but the 128GB ssd that my Yoga 2 13 has just isn't enough space for that. I'm thinking about trying a 512GB samsung 850 evo.

Hi Gunter,

Thanks for the info you posted. Apologies, I know it's an old post, but hopefully you can answer a quick question.

I've just looked inside my Yoga 2 13 and it looks like it's the same model, I can see the empty slot for the m2 SSD card/drive. I've just ordered one and I was wondering if I can set this to be the system/boot drive.

That's how I found your post. You're saying you used Paragon software - great, just bought a license for that as well.

I guess I will see the options once I've downloaded the software, but is there anything special to look out for? Also - did you just plug in the SSD card, put the laptop back together and booted into Windows and then started the software and took it from there? Any additional steps required?

Regards,

Raf

Re: Yoga 2 13 Internals

Haven't read of anyone else doing this so thought I'd share ...

Have the BB yoga 2 13 with 128 SSD (m.2) and wanted to utilize the HDD 'slot' populated with SSD.

I first tried to figure out how to use a regular 2.5 SSD but never could figure out a reasonable way to convert that to the plug on the MB.  So, after much reading, shopping, etc. I found this adapter ...

mSATA SSD as WD Blue UltraSlim SATA3 HDD WD5000MPCK SFF-8784  from seller microsatacables

and this cable ...

OEM Lenovo Yoga 2 13 20344 Laptop HDD Hard Drive Cable w/ Connector DC02001VK00 from seller buytabletpart

... both on ebay.

Then found a 1TB samsung 850 evo msata drive on amazon for a price I couldn't refuse.

I'm very happy to report that this combination is working together perfectly.  It's installed and I'm using the machine to post this.  For now the whole thing is floating' and it seems to snug enough to keep everything in place so am using it as is for now.  I might still get the cartridge for the hdd from lenovov so it can be anchored properly but for now it's good.

So, for a minimal outlay I have a device with a ton of storage that is still easy on the battery, reasonably cool running and quite fast.

Thank you so very much for posting this. The hybrid drive died in my yoga a couple of weeks ago and finding a replacement for WD5000M22K has been a chore. No one makes or sells them anymore. I had already settled on the adapter/SSD combo you mentioned, but I was worried I might be ordering the wrong parts or it wouldn't work. This has put my mind at ease.

It took me forever to find that adapter - that's why I went ahead and posted about it.  I had same fear as you - happy to hear my post helped.

I got one bsod related to a paging fault.  I went in and created a system-managed page file.  Since then it has run without any problems.

Has anyone tried the intel 540s M2 (240GB) or the Sandisk X400 M2 (256GB) ? I can not find any crucial SSD in my country, the only compatible I found is the Samsung 850 evo but exceed my budget. Is there any complite compatibility list of SSD for the lenovo yoga 2 13??
