Yoga 2 13 Internals

Hi everybody,

I just received my Yoga 2 13 here in Germany on thursday.

I thought some people here are probably interested about upgradability.

My version is a core i3 4010U, 4GB, 500GH HD. Price was 799 €. I didn't see this version in the US Lenovo shop.

The HD is a special ultra slim 5mm version (WD5000MPCK) with a special connector (SFF-8784) which can't be easily replaced by a SSD.

But there is a free M.2 slot (NGFF). I already ordered a 256GB M.2 SSD (Crucial m500) and will try to move the OS to the SSD next week.

I guess the SSD models will occupy the M.2 slot and will have the HD slot free.

The Wifi card is also replacable. Unfortunally the memory is soldered and not expandable.

There is already a yoga2 13 hardware maintenance manual, just google it.

Gunter

Re: Yoga 2 13 Internals

If you look inside the hardware maintenance manual you can see the following HD and SSD components:

10 SSD, 128G NGFF, MZNTD128HAGM-000L1 16200587 N
10 SSD, 128G NGFF, LGT-128M6G 16200483 N
10 SSD, 128G NGFF, THNSNH128GDNT 16200460 N

10 SSD, 256G NGFF, MZNTD256HAGL-000L1 16200588 N
10 SSD, 256G NGFF, LGT-256M6G 16200484 N
10 SSD, 256G NGFF, THNSNH256GDNT 16200461 N

11 HDD, 5mm 500G, WD5000MPCK-24AWHT0 6G
11 HDD, 5mm 500G+16GB/8BG, Hybrid 5mm SSHD TBA N
11 HDD, 5mm 500G+16GB/8BG, WD5000M22K-24Z1LT0

I have the first HDD option.

Then there is this 5mm 500G+16GB/8BG, SSHD which seems to be a 5mm HDD with integrated SSD cache, but this is TBA.

Question is, what is that last entry (WD5000M22K)? I couldn't find information about it. Probably there is a small 16GB cache in the M.2 slot together with a normal HD?

Re: Yoga 2 13 Internals

I got my Crucial M500 240GB, M.2 now and can happily report that it works fine in my Yoga 2 13.

I used Paragon Migrate OS to SSD 4.0 to move the Windows partitions to the SSD and it was a breeze. Took hardly 15 minutes.

Re: Yoga 2 13 Internals

I purchased my yoga 2 from BB in North America and it seems like i have the m.2 slot and the same 500 GB hybrid HD. I'm also thinking about putting in an ssd in the m.s slot as well. Did you keep the 500GB HD in there along with the new m.2 SSD? Has your battery life changed at all?

Re: Yoga 2 13 Internals

Yes, i kept the 500GB HDD in there.

I experienced no impact on battery life. On the HDD are only backups, videos and music files.

When I watch videos or hear music, then the SSD is idle and should consume very litte.

When I don't the HDD will spin down after 5 minutes (I changed power settings).

You should give it a try.

By the way, which Yoga 2 and which exact HDD model do you have? My HDD is not a hybrid, its a standard (albeit 5mm high and having a special connector) magnetic HDD without integrated SSD cache.

Re: Yoga 2 13 Internals

Hi Gunter,

Thanks for the response.

I'm also wondering if your Yoga 2 has a backlit keyboard? There seems to be some discrepancy in the communty whether or not specific models of the yoga 2 have a backlit keyboard or not. Did you purchase your Yoga 2 through the lenovo website or from a store?

Re: Yoga 2 13 Internals

Hi there. I'll jump in. Just got a Yoga 2 13 a few days ago. Ordered from Lenovo in the US. Core i7 4500u, 8 GB RAM, and the hard drive is listed as WDC WD5000M22K-24Z1LT0-SSHD-16GB. The keyboard is backlit, and has an option to turn it off and on using the Function key and the spacebar. It's quite nice when you are in a dark room. I plan on putting in an M.2 SSD when I get the chance. Haven't popped the back off yet, but I'm sure that the SSD slot is there. I'm pretty sure the HDD is a hybrid with a 16GB SSD cache and not a 16GB SSD in the mSATA slot. I guess I need to get out the screwdriver and check, though...

Re: Yoga 2 13 Internals

Let me know what you find out...Online sales chat reps are pretty much useless, one guy told me that the Yoga 2 13 doesn't have an M.2 slot!

I suppose I could get by with 4GB, but the 8GB configurations also include 256GB SSD drives so the extra 4GB and SSD option is a good deal for the extra $200.  I'd like to know if Lenovo is using a 256GB M.2 drive - or are they installing a 256GB SSD in the proprietary drive bay (leaving the M.2 slot open for another drive).  No sales person at Lenovo seems to be able to answer that question.  Has anyone here opened up their 256GB SSD model?

I read this post again, looks like Gunter already answered my question.  It appears that if you order a 256GB model, the proprietary drive slot is free - which doesn't do anyone much good since these drives are probably only available to OEM's.
For that reason, I'm going to order the i7/8GB/500GB model at $1099 and order a Crucial 480GB M.2 drive. That will give me nearly 1TB of storage.
I was seriously considering the Yoga 2 Pro, but as enticing as that QHD+ display is - it comes with its own set of problems, particularly scaling.  For me, the Yoga 2 13's lower resolution FHD is actually an advantage.

Re: Yoga 2 13 Internals

Well, mine certainly has an M.2 slot. It's right below the hybrid HDD and to the right of the wi-fi card in the picture. Taking the back cover off was incredibly simple. Looks like the battery may be replaceable as well.
