After windows installed the latest update (KB3140743), my laptop got the blue screen of death even before getting to the log on screen. I need to get to the safe mode boot screen, but according to Lenovo support site (https://support.lenovo.com/no/nn/documents/ht116905) I need to first get to the log on screen in order to do this. Can this really be the case? On other PCs I have always been able to hit the F8 during boot to get to the advanced start up menu, but not on this one.
Any suggestions on how to get to the safe mode when the PC will not get to log on?

Hi ghauan ,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
Starting with Windows 8 and above , traditional F8 to go to advance safe mode would no longer work.
1. Use the System Configuration Tool (msconfig.exe) - works in Windows 8 & 8.1
2. Use Shift + Restart - works in Windows 8 & 8.1
3. Boot from a System Recovery CD/DVD - works only in Windows 8
4. Boot from a System Recovery Memory Stick - works in Windows 8 & 8.1
5. Use F8 or Shift + F8 (doesn't work when using UEFI BIOS & SSDs)
Finally what I try to do when I cannot even go to initial Windows screen or do not have a recovery disc :
Voluntarily crashing windows ( turn on and as soon as Lenovo splash would read WIndows to turn it off , then off and off within 2 minutes ) With this Windows would be able to initiate recovery option .
Note that you may access advance boot option likewise with a recovery image (option 4).
You may also try to download the media creation tool and create installation media for another PC .Boot on created iso and repair your computer > Troubleshoot.
Update us how it goes.
