Yoga 2 13" 2nd SSD requirements

My system shipped with 128GB mSATA SSD drive. Plan to add a second drive in the open slot 2. Have done this before on other systems I've owned so should not be a challenge. I've read most of the posts on this issue but I'm not sure of the storage size limit that can be used on a 2nd drive.  I spoke with Lenovo tech support but did not get a very "warm" feeling that he was sure of his answer. I was told that the 2nd drive could only be 128GB, same as my original drive in slot one. Max size of the 2 drives could not exceed 256GB.  From what I am reading, I don't believe his answer is correct. Does anyone know from actual experience what is the maximum size storage I can use for a 2nd SSD drive in slot 2?  I would like to use either 256GB or 512GB depending on the costs. If you have a suggestions of make and model, that would also be much appreciated.

I can't say Lenovo tech gave me much confidence on this issue. I trust real world support and experience far better.

Re: Yoga 2 13" 2nd SSD requirements

Much appreciated the quick responce. I've actual gone ahead and ordered a Samsung 500GB mSATA drive. Should receive on Monday. I will install shortly after and report on the success. Again, thank you!

Re: Yoga 2 13" 2nd SSD requirements

The Yoga 2 13 has an extra m.2 connector, not mSATA as the Y2Pro has.

Have you verified the Samsung will work with the BIOS?

As Lenovo uses white list that does not allow all brands / types.

Re: Yoga 2 13" 2nd SSD requirements

Thanks for catching this. I must have picked up the idea it that the 2nd slot was mSATA from someone else.  I will correct my order to m.2 SSD.  I thought Samsung would be compatible since this is what is used in the 1st slot for main SSD drive (128GB). I will see if I can check on whether the bios is compatible.

I only wish that the Lenovo tech support could have given me all this info when I asked but he seemed very unsure of this issue.

Again, thank you.

Re: Yoga 2 13" 2nd SSD requirements

I just spent 30 minutes on phone with Lenovo tech support, again to try and verify the requirements for this 2nd ssd drive. I was just told that this 2nd drive is mSATA and NOT m.2. Also the max size is 256GB. Latestly when I inquired about the bios they said I "should" not have any trouble with bios if using the right size SSD.

I'm curious as to where you got the information on this 2nd drive requiring m.2 ssd instead of mSATA.  I have looked all over the internet for clarification on this point but can't seem to get anything. Lenovo doesn't post this info anywhere that I can find as yet.

I've seen other postings on this community site that indicated mSATA but at 512GB.

It really gets confusing when Lenovo does not seem to post these types of specifications that are readily found.

Your thoughts??

Re: Yoga 2 13" 2nd SSD requirements

The only thing I can do I show you pictures and tell what works in our Yoga 2 13 machines.

This is what your Yoga will look like from the inside (forget the UltraSlim HDD):

Link to image

As you can see:

  • 500GB WD HDD with special SFF-8784 connector; so non SATA
not very easy to get a special cable to connect a normal SATA SSD ...
  • m.2 interface for the Wifi/Bt combo card
the number of usable cards is minimized by a BIOS white list
  • m.2 interface for SSD  22*80mm
Tested in this forum are the Crucial M500 and faster M550, ranging from 128 to 512 GB.
Most Samsung SSDs seem to work, but not all...

RichardtheKing made a nice guide how to install the m.2 SSD:

Good luck.

Re: Yoga 2 13" 2nd SSD requirements

Please note that you will need to disable "Secure Boot" in the BIOS for the M2 SSD card to be fully recognised (you can renable when the overall operation is completed)

Re: Yoga 2 13" 2nd SSD requirements

For me just removing the HDD and twice rebooting the system worked.

I've been secure all the time ...

Re: Yoga 2 13" 2nd SSD requirements

After several days of further research and more discussions with Lenovo tech support, I have learned, to my dismay that I have referred to my system by the wrong name. Instead of a Yoga 2, my system is simply Yoga 13. The model number on the back plate is 20175. It seems that the Yoga name is used on many variations and is hard to distinguish. There was even some confussion among the Lenovo support reps.

This is why I was getting different advise as to the type of SSD boards (either m.2 or mSATA). I believe that for my system the 2nd slot holds mSATA but I wouldn't stake my life on it just yet. I'm still not quite clear as to what the max memory size is,  128, or 256 or 512GB.

I'm sitting with a Samsung 840EVO mSATA 500GB drive that was ordered based on some initial information. I have yet to open my system until I am confident as to the exact specifications of the SSD accepted in slot #2.  I have not as yet seen any postings anywhere online from someone with my same system that has installed the additional upgrade.

If anyone in the community with a model 20175 Yoga 13 has successfully installed the 2nd SSD board, I would greatly appreciate hearing exactly what you used and how you went about the install.

My applogies to all those who initially replied to my posting based on my error. If Lenovo made their support more user friendly, much of my confusion would have been alleviated early on..
