Yoga 2 No Power when plugged in even w/o battery

My daughter's Yoga 2 won't power on. No lights. No boot. Totally dead.

The charger works as it's been tested on another laptop and worked fine.

Tried solution recommended to disconnect battery, hold the power button for 30 seconds, plug in directly and try again. Still nothing.

Out of warranty

Any thoughts?

Re: Yoga 2 No Power when plugged in even w/o battery

Hi bfc1 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Best that you also try to remove the battery , harddrive , memory and press down the power button for 15 seconds to power drain while unplugged .  then connect the charger and press the Novo button if power would not show any activity.

What is the machine number from the sticker so I can get you the hardware manual for reference specific to your machine . You may also go to the support site for the manuals .

There are times that it is not always the motherboard and just DC in connector that is having the issue if not a power daugther board.  Check for any burnt marks or bulged capacitor if you have the tools or skill .

Update us how it goes.

Regards

Re: Yoga 2 No Power when plugged in even w/o battery

The sticker has a few numbers:

Lenovo Yoga 2 11

Model Name: 20428

MTM 59423636

I did remove the battery and the hard drive. I did not have the memory removed when pressing power to drain the battery. I will try again without the memory. I'll also have to figure out where to find the Novo button.

I visually inspected the inside for any burn marks, melted connections, etc. Could not see any. I did not see any bulged capicitors.  I visually inspected the DC in connector. There did not appear to be any broken soldier points.

Any recommended repair path? Would it be worth trying to replace the dc connector or power daughter board? (assuming they are relatively easy to replace) If it comes to replacing the mobo, I'll just buy a new laptop.

Is it possible to get repair service from Lenovo outside of warranty?

Thanks for your response Spidey! Thank in advance to anyone with any additional insight.

Re: Yoga 2 No Power when plugged in even w/o battery

I am working on exact problem. None of the batt fixes worked (unplug, drain power etc).. But I found the problem. Bad power board at switch. $25 dollar part ebay.. Just ordered. I can use comp my lifting the lock on one side of the small ribbon cable by (SSHD) and messing with it. Power will come on. If I lock it down comp shuts off. If I leave it loos and push on it to make contact and then leave it un plugged comp works

I will update when part arrives and installed. Looks very easy to replace. Until then will not keep small ribbon plugged in and wont turn comp off completely.

Re: Yoga 2 No Power when plugged in even w/o battery

Belram, glad that worked for you! I ended up taking mine to a repair shop. $300 and a new motherboard later and I'm back in business. Smiley Frustrated

To anyone else experiencing this issue, I would try the removing the battery process first. If that doesn't work, spend the $20 and do as Belram did. (maybe I missed it, but I couldn't see a link for the tutorial Belram used. If it hasn't been posted, maybe spidey or belram could post the direct link.) Worst case, you wasted a little time and 20 bucks. If I could do it again, I would try it before going to a shop. Live and learn. Guess I'm still better off than buying a new laptop.

Thanks for your input and good luck to anyone else with this issue.

Hi bfc1 and belram ,

Greetings to both of you.

Great that all is working now.

Thank you both for sharing on this topic as it would be a good source of option to fellow community members specially in terms of power issues. Nowadays OEM gets a separate power boards so in case of failure , damage would not go directly to the motherboard but instead augmented thru a cheaper daughter board repair.

Please feel free to post your queries and to share your ideas here on our community at any time.

Goodluck to all your endeavors.

Cheers

Re: Yoga 2 No Power when plugged in even w/o battery

For the link look in Spidey's post under "Service Training Video Guide" under "Power Button Board"

paper tape you are exactly right. $20 was definitely cheap enough to try without much worry.

For others with this problem my daughter's laptop's (funny same as paper tape) symptoms were:

No light by the power button indicating it was charging when plugged in and the computer would not turn on.

So looking around in there and after I tried all the other suggestions (disconnecting battery etc.) I disconnected one of the ends of the tiny ribbon (flip up the little latch and pull ribbon out-See Spidey's link) and the computer all of sudden came on and started working. When I put the ribbon end back in it and push the latch down the computer would shut off like it was shorting out. If I wanted to start the computer again I would undo the latch and push on the ribbon a little to make contact quickly and it would start again. As long as I didnt latch the ribbon again the comp would run as long as I wanted it to, until I shut it off. (using Windows, not by the power button).

Now it's running as it should be. The new board off ebay comes with a ribbon already latched to it. One screw to pull board out/in and latch the other end of the ribbon to the MB. It was too easy to be true so I wasn't that confident it would work, but it did!   Good Luck
