Yoga 2 Pro: 8GB of Ram vs i7-4500u processor

2014-01-28, 5:02 AM

So I'm pretty convinced on buying the Yoga 2 Pro but not sure which setup I should go with. I'm mainly using it for browsing the internet, programming using C++ and Matlab, and running some word processing programs.

Here are the two setups

Setup 1:

Processor4th Generation Intel Core i7-4500U Processor (1.80GHz 1600MHz 4MB)-

Operating System Windows 8.1 64-

Display13.3" QHD+ LED Glossy Multi-touch 3200x1800-

GraphicsIntel® HD Graphics 4400-

Memory4.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600 MHz-

Hard Drive256GB SSD

Setup 2:

Processor4th Generation Intel Core i5-
4200U Processor( 1.60GHz 1600MHz 3MB)-

Operating SystemWindows 8.1 64-

Display13.3" QHD+ LED Glossy Multi-touch 3200x1800-

GraphicsIntel HD 4400-

Memory8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600 MHz

Hard Drive256GB SSD

Any help appreciated! Is it worth having more RAM or having the better processor.

For me, there's no question that more RAM is the way to go. If you find you need more RAM and you don't have it, it can be painful since the RAM on the Yoga 2 Pro is not upgradable. You'll want 8GB if you ever want to run a Virtual Machine or even an emulator (the Android emulator I'm playing with these days consumes a lot of memory).

The i5 is already pretty quick..the i7 will be only marginally faster.

If you are in the US, Best Buy has the i7/8GB/256GB configuration for a good price...then you'll have both!

Thanks grisjuan.

I'm canadian unforunately so I can't get that one otherwise I probably would. The canadian one with both is around 1700. While one or the other is around 1200 which I don't think its worth another 500 for both unforunately. I think I'm leaning towards the one with more RAM though so thanks!

Hi, I think that the Yoga 2 Pro is a good option. I cannot tell you about the whole specs of it, but regarding the processor, I'm preety sure is one of the best of the market right now. Its microprocessor is 67% more energy efficient. And it is also based on more efficient Haswell core, (offers from 2% to 10% better performance)

Here you can see how it is totally superior to another cpu also from the brand Intel or even other brands, as AMD.

Good luck with your final chose!:smileyhappy:

RAM absolutely. The i7 is not really much different from the i5 (they're both only dual-core CPUs) so the memory is a much more substantial upgrade I think.

seen from a very superficial stats perspective, the ram upgrade gets you a 100% increase (8GB vs. 4GB), while the CPU upgrade barely 12.5% at normal clock speed (1.8ghz vs 1.6ghz).

I do have a question though I have a relative who lives in the states if I bought the one from bestbuy in the US would the warranty still hold on Canada?
