Re: Yoga 2 Pro - Boot errors

(tl;dr

I ran the Windows 8.1 ISO off of a thumb drive. Chose the 'repair my system' option. Chose 'setup repair,' and finally my computer booted normally. It was a software problem.)

Hey all,

I had the same problem for the past few days. I'll tell you all (1) what was wrong and (2) how I fixed it. Hopefully my personal experience will help some of you out there with similar problems.

(1) What was wrong:

- My Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro (Type 80AY - Model 80AYCTO, i7 256 GB SSD) running Windows 8.1 received the Boot Manager Failed screen after I received a BSOD one day.

- I opened the Y2P earlier to the BSOD to tighten the screws near the power port (the hinge/screws in this thing suck), so I thought that I potentially fudged something and caused hardware damage.

- I tried all the variations of messing with the BIOS settings that have been listed in this thread. None of them worked. Tried turning on legacy support, returning to optimal settings, turning secure boot mode on and off, etc.
-My SSD showed up in the BIOS menu (but would not show as a bootable device), so I thought that it was still good. But I am not sure whether the BIOS can remember what SSD you have (I don't think so, but wasn't sure at the time).

-I opened up the Y2P, unplugged the SSD, and replugged it back in. I also tightened all of the screws on the MOBO, SSD connector, etc. Tried hard resetting the battery. Nothing worked by messing with the existing hardware or BIOS settings.

(2) Finally, here's what I did to fix it:

- I ran Ubuntu off of a pen drive, it ran fine. I tried finding my hard drive to see if my old files were still there. Didn't have success, but I think that was my own lack of experience with the OS.

-FINALLY WHAT WORKED: I ran the Windows 8.1 ISO off of a thumb drive. Chose the 'repair my system' option. Chose 'setup repair,' and finally my computer booted normally. It was a software problem.

Re: Yoga 2 Pro - Boot errors

Hi guys,

I have this issue since now 2 years and half (since the begining) but for an unknow reason, it's worst  since this morning.

So we are all clear lenovo is **bleep**. Easier to buy a new one (dell seems good) but I would just like to add 2 informations when reading your post.

The prob is not only on yoga PRO. I have a 2 13.  bios version 96CN29WW (v1.15)  ssd LITEONIT LGT-256.

Second thing - I use linux so it's not Windows... (for one time) it's lenovo who cannot make a simple and robust computer.

thanks

This was what worked for me...initially.

I downloaded Windows 8.1 from Microsoft (Free) and imaged the iso onto a thumb drive. Then, used the thumb drive to boot up the Y2P. Select repair but Win 8.1 says the drive is locked.

Again, rebooted into the Win 8.1 on thumb drive and selected Command prompt.
At the command prompt, I typed in the following:
c:\>bootrec /FixMbr
c:\> bootrec /FixBoot
c:\> bootrec /RebuildBcd

Rebooted and Windows 8 came back. That was 2 days ago.

Today, the Y2P is exhibiting instability. Likely it's the heat that's causing the problem. I'll try to put in a new coat of thermal grease and swap out the SSD board (VIUU3 SSD Board 90004971) when I get the board.

Having the same problem and shaking a notebook seems to help. Could you please re-share this picture again, I guess I need to apply the same hardware "fix"? :)

Hi, MPrsic

Reshared that picture: https://www.dropbox.com/s/y9skkhlgzohx5dr/yoga2pro_back.jpg

I'm still using that fix with paper, ssd works fine.

We are at 2019 and haven't fixed this issue. I bought a Lenovo Yoga 920 and I have the same hardware problem. I need to apply pressure on the back before booting up and my laptop is just a few weeks old!.

I am going to use the warranty but it is impressive that this thread is 5 years old and Lenovo has not fixed this issue.

Please Lenovo do something!
