Re: Yoga 2 Pro - Screen Flickering and Screen Blanking

2014-04-15, 13:01 PM

Hello Mark,

I am from UK and the same screen flickering problem while on battery exists here as well. So apparently no continent is safe from this problem. I have purchased mine and have to sadly return it as I didn't want to go through with repairs and all with a brand new premium laptop. I have ordered the pre-configured i7-8GB-256SSD Clementine Orange unit.

Although I was following this forum but I took a gamble to make a purchase but in vain. I love Y2P and its an awesome product. Its just the quality and testing issues which is ruining its image in the market.

I would suggest Lenovo to hold their sales, address to these problems, fix them and then start selling the product again. Its just too much of a hassle on customer side to order a new product and then deal with the repair times and being unable to use the product. I am a student and bought it for my studies but I have deeply suffered from my purchase.

I hope Lenovo is listening and fix all these issues, because I really want to purchase it again. So please Lenovo do something about it and pay attention to the production quality if you have to compete with rivals especially Apple.

Thanks

If it stops when moving the mouse, then your problem is "Panel Self Refresh".  I can replicate the exact same issue on my Y2P if I enable "Panel Self-Refresh" on the Intel HD Graphics Control panel.  So try to disable that option found under "POWER>On Battery>Panel Self-Refresh".

There is also a duplicate option in the Lenovo Energy Manager software, but I believe it only works with the original intel drivers that shipped with the laptop.  If you use newer intel-provided drivers, disable it from the intel HD Graphics Control Panel.

Interesting...lets see if that does anything to solve it.

why does this cause an issue?

Re: Yoga 2 Pro - Screen Flickering and Screen Blanking

Well I don't know exactly, but here is my theory:

The backlight may use some form of modulation, ie. it is not constantly on, but flickers by design.  That may be to reduce power consumption.  If the blanking of the backlight is designed to run on a constant frequency (i.e. 120 Hz) or adapts to the brightness but the panel itself changes its refresh rate, then it is possible the two go out of sync.  Or if the panel refresh is linked to the backlight blanking, it is possible the backlight controller is not compatible with the range of refresh rates possible by the panel.

Even if no modulation is used, it could be that the backlight controller has a timing range to detect whether there is any activity on the monitor or not.  If not it shuts it down.  If this monitoring is done purely based on the rate of new screen-information (which would be perfectly logical if the refresh rate were constant or had an absolute minimum) then as the refresh-rate drops it may trigger it to shut down.  In this case, intel could simply limit the minimum refresh to a threshold above that of what panel controller interprets as shut off.  The best offcourse would be to modify the backlight controller, but that may not feasible software-wise.

Any way, the fact is that the blanking happens because the led backlight goes out, not necessarily the actual screen.  And these are just my theories and I may be wrong...

After sending my computer in twice for repair. They replaced the motherboard and LCD screen, and this seems to have corrected the error. I don't know why it idn't work the first time, but I think after more paople send their computers in, the repair protocol will become more consistent.

I just got mine sent back and they replaced the LCD screen. I'm sure this problem isn't software as some of you guys have mentioned. I'm surprised they just didn't send me a new laptop as a replacement when I had the problem since I had it less than a week before it was sent in for repair.

I only had a night with the laptop since getting it back and it seemed fine. Although I didn't have the the problem with the screen until day 5 with the laptop when I first bought it.

Correction to my previous post:

I was totally wrong regarding the backlight.  I re-enabled Panel Self-Refresh to see what is happenning in more detail and under better lighting conditions.  The backlight actually stays on all the time.  It is the LCD that turns black, then white and then shows the signal again.  Yes when moving the mouse fast it stops it.  If you keep it going long enough it stops the flickering altogether.

Hello again.

Some of you insist that flickering is only present on battery.

Wrong. In my case the screen keeps flickering both on battery and on power adapter under 50%!

I wanna stress, 50-55%! 40% is a comfort level for my eyes, but it flickers abnormally on such levels.
