Re: Yoga 2 Pro vs. Dell XPS 11 - whether the XPS-11 has an active digitizer

Huh that's weird. Why are so many online saying it doesn't have the pen?

Re: Yoga 2 Pro vs. Dell XPS 11 - whether the XPS-11 has an active digitizer

The XPS-11 comes with a stylus, which Dell calls an "Active Dell Stylus".

It is a capacitve stylus (i.e., an electrical conductor, just like your body), and works with the capacitive touch screen, in the same manner that your finger does.

An active digitizer is technology built into the display that generates an electromagnetic field, and  numerous sensors (perhaps 48) on the display edges that detect disturbances to the field.

They work in conjunction with a stylus containing either a permanent magnet or an electro-magnet.

They can detect pressure level because the stylus is designed to change the characteristics of its magnetic field based on the pressure applied to the tip.

What makes you think you have an active digitizer?

Because my stylus has a battery in it and doesn't work if I take out the battery?  Also palm rejection turns on with the tablet?  It did not come with any stylus, had to order part 332NG.  Also Windows System Information would not list support for a pen if it is just capacitive, as in my screen shots.

Try googling for "battery powered capacitive sylus". You'll find a lot of hits.

Odd that it didn't come with a stylus.

The "parts list" for my order specifies "Dell Active Stylus".

Try this...

Pen support (as listed by the OS) on the XPS 11...

No pen support on the Yoga 2 Pro...

As you can see the Yoga would support any capacitive pen.

Also the stylus for the XPS 11 is the same stylus used for the Dell Venue Pro 8 & 11.  Supports, pressure sensitivity which a capacitive stylus would not have.

That 10-point multi-touch is referring to a 10-point capacitive screen.

And, yes, it's possible for a capacitive stylus to be pressure sensitive.

For example, "There are a number of pressure sensitive capacitive stylusoptions available for the iPad, ,,,"

But it wouldn't say pen unless it was active.

I don't know what the criteria is for a device to be listed as a "pen".

What I'm saying is that the XPS-11 doesn't have what is generally considered an active digitizer, i.e., generation of an electromagnetic field for which it detects disturbances made by a suitable stylus.

Instead, it works by capacitance.

And I'm saying you are wrong.  It is not capacitive, I can hover without touching the screen and it detects that.

I believe that Dell is using Synaptics technology.

A capacitive stylus with hover capability.
