Re: Yoga 2 Pro vs. Dell XPS 11 - whether the XPS-11 has an active digitizer

2013-12-21, 5:58 AM

I just found this article:

http://liliputing.com/2013/10/hands-dell-venue-11-pro.html

Apparently, Dell is indeed using Synaptics with the Venue 11 Pro.

I suspect that Dell is  using the same technology for the XPS-11.

In fact, Synaptics developed a special Touch layer compatible both with touch and pen input - so it will show you 'capacitive' with 'pen input'...

But people seemed to have problems with the Synaptics active digitizer - maybe the controller is not capable to handle the high res of the XPS 11 ...

Much more interesting: do you get descent results with the stylus? e.g.: no jumping mouse, straight lines, ...

Whatever terminology is being used for active digitizer, the Synaptics controller "presents" both a touchscreen and pen device, but all input is based on the capacitive touchscreen (in the case of the pen, in conjunction with the Synaptic capacitive stylus).

When I placed my order, I was under the impression that the XPS-11 had what I (and I believe nearly everyone) consider to be an active digitizer - a screen that generates an electromagnetic field and sensors to detect disturbances in the field, coupled with a stylus to cause such disturbances.

I would be curious about accuracy. For example, how well the Synaptic device works for handwriting recognition.

Is it decent for digital inking?

I'd love to see a review by a competent evaluator (such as tomshardware) comparing the Synaptic solution to a "real" active digitizer.

So bottom line seems you can take notes with the thing and it has palm rejection. That's good.

How is it to use? As smooth as Wacom? I have a Note 3 and the stylus on that is butter.  Have noticed the price keeps going up at Dell.  Was 999 for cheapest model now 1149 which is pretty high for an i3. Must be selling well.

Is the keyboard weird to use?

** Tbe stylus initially released with the Venue 8 Pro was pretty horrible but seems to have improved a bit with driver updates. Still it is not N-Trig and nowhere near a Wacom. Thats what users have been saying.

reviewing other manufacturers' products is not exactly a goal or one of the purposes of these forums.
