Yes, it is really bad at 0.49GHz, on windows 10.

Re: Yoga 3 11 - CPU stuck at 0.48 Ghz - 99% of the time

I'm using TS_Obsidian on my Yoga 3 11 w/ Win 10 x64. I have it set to performance, bd prochot unchecked, and turned on. I installed the acpi driver, but did not install the Intel thermal framework. I run the windows power option set to balanced, and my cpu speeds fluctuate between 798 MHz - 2.85 GHz whether I'm on battery or have the charger connected. Without ThrottleStop I'm stuck at 498 MHz, so thank you unclewebb for authoring it!

Thank you Trigabyte for your clear explanation of the "why" we are experiencing this behavior. Based on the information you provided, I figure that by reducing the GPU utilization, I will give more of the TDP to the CPU.

As to what to do. I do not see the behavior anymore when I lower the resolution from the recommended 1920 X 1080 to 1360 X 768 or lower.  I can use the laptop all the way until the battery has 10% juice and the CPU speed is not throttled down to 0.48 as it is the case when my resolution is set to the recommended setting.

Now that I know how to avoid this CPU throttling down issue I love this little machine again.  I run VMs & SQL Server on it without any issues.

Re: Yoga 3 11 - CPU stuck at 0.48 Ghz - 99% of the time

Ok guys, I think Microsoft screwed something up with April 2018 Update, because now I have another problem with processor speed.

With ThrottleStop, BD Prochot ON, my processor stuck on 500 MHz as usual.

But with BD Prochot OFF, processor now stuck on 800 MHz, and only setting higher multplier can solving the problem.

But despite throttle stop, while speed is ok (with turbo) I think system working a lot slower. Any browser, are extremly slow, and only Edge is usable in any way. YouTube wideo stutter and load very slow. While this happens, temperatures are normal and not reach maximum (50-70 degrees)

I installed fresh system few times, install newest drivers for everything (I supposed), but still, computer is noticeable slower.

Can have the same problem as me?

Hello, I had the same problem on a Yoga 3 1170.

I discovered the problem a few days ago while simultaneously watching a tutorial and doing some advanced Excel.

I managed yesterday night to get back to more powerfull mode by setting the balanced mode in Intel graphics panel. It was in perfomance mode when plugged.

Now run something heavy and see if it comes back again after the computer has been on for 10-15 minutes. My guess is that by lowering the load you've just managed to miss prochot going high... or even that your main board isn' as sesitive. But if it does throttle again, then throttlestop is the only answer.

Btw.. for those who say that throttlestop means heavy battery use.. this is true to an extent but you can set lower power modes in throttlestop that still keep prochot low *and* give you a decent battery life.

Few days later... Problem seems to be solved. No performance problem has arisen since I turned of the "performance mode" of the intel driver.

CPU frequency goes up and down, it is not stucked on 0.8GHz anymore. The user experience is more snappy, but I find SSD access still a bit "heavy".

BTW, Excel works like a charm event when having a youtube tutorial or Netflix series playing simultaneously.

Hello,

where exactly is the setup for that?

In a special application?

I don't have the option to deactivate it.

Greetings,

Pfeffer

It may be that the previous poster was referring to Control Panel -> search "intel" -> Intel HD Graphics

There's a bundle of options for reducing battery usage, which presumably reduces heat and therefore makes throttling less likely.

I've already applied a few changes to hopefully keep my Yoga 3 11 from semi-permanently throttling.

Re: Yoga 3 11 - CPU stuck at 0.48 Ghz - 99% of the time

I have a  Yoga 500-14IBD with Core i3-5005U and experienced this problem recently.

I used a power supply from a Lenovo LEgion Y530 to charge the Yoga and noticed extreme slowness in Windows 10. It turned out the CPU was stuck at 0.5 GHz. Booting linux was the same, CPU at 0.5 GHz.

Later in Windows I noticed that when I unplug the AC cord, the CPU jumps up to the regular 2GHz. If I olug it back in, CPU goes to 0.5 GHz. At that time the battery was already full.

I'll try with the original charger (which is currently lost, that's why I used the other) later and report.

Edit: With the original charger I did not (yet) see the CPU freq to drop.
