Re: Yoga 3 14 Fan Noise

I just bought and opened my new Yoga 3 14 inch laptop and same issue as mentioned above, very loud noise at high decibels from fan, not possible to work with

It's really disappointing to get this almost straight away after starting the laptop up, took away the nice feeling you usually get after unpacking.
Is there a BIOS update that I can try?
I will have no choice but to bring back to retailer if this cannot be fixed in next 1-2 as I need a laptop I can work with

Re: Yoga 3 14 Fan Noise

2015-06-05, 21:32 PM

Hey guys,

I am reading so many bad things about the fan being so noisy. So I am just wondering, how loud is it actually?
How many dB are we actually talking about? Could someone kindly measure it?

I am asking since I am using a very old laptop that constantly goes up to 50 dB. My laptop already is about 4 years old and so it might explain why it keeps staying at 50dB (and that is already considered quiet as it explodes to about 60dB or even more when dying cause of the summer heat). The thing is I don't get annoyed by those 50dB anymore since I am surrounded by it every day and probably used to it by now.

So how loud is the Yoga's fan actually? If it is below 50dB then I don't consider the fan to be an issue that should stop me from buying it.

Thanks! :)

It is not loud it is just the high frequenz. My parents cant hear it tho!

My brother can hear it... Got a real headache of it.

You shouldn´t buy it before it´s clear fixed. I´ll send back the laptop tomorrow.

for myself, I'm on my second now and it's loads better than it had been, but the problem with the original was rubbing/frictions issues, more than high pitched sounds. I pulled my phone out and this is what I got with right now. 30db ambient sound in my dinning room...when the system was turned on, I got a bit of a spike , around 50db, but it came back down immediately to 30, and jumped around 30-34db's... Cat jumped off the bed above me, and it went to 55db, but dropped right back down to 30-34....

@turned on netflix, no sound...30-44db....with sound %, 71db(not the fan at this point as it hasn't ramped up at all)....turned on the fan cleaner....between 75-80db...under load with prime95, full heat is 68-71db..... As I type this message, it's staying around 45-50, but only because it's registering my key presses, and fan hasn't ramped up much at all, so for an office environment, this is perfectly acceptable.... Personally, I really don't find anything wrong with the fan currently, and I usually can pickup higher frequencies squeals...I'm not hearing that here....

Cheers!

Steph S.

Thank you both for your answers,

and thank you psyke45 for your detailed description. Your results are actually what I hoped for as I don't consider 30-40dB to be a disturbance. Also, 70dB for being tormented by a system checking tool is something I consider acceptable.

So the real problem is the high frequency that some people notice and some don't. So the question then is how high this frequency actually is. I assume Akrodan's brother must be pretty young if it even caused headache.

I am having hopes that I might not be able to hear it anymore... and if I still should be able to hear it then I hope for it to be quiet enough for me to ignore it or cover it up with other sounds like music.

Anyway, I shall wait and see if Lenovo can come up with some clever solution to this problem. :D I am in no rush to buy a new laptop as long as my current one does not decide to rest in peace. :D

Has there been any solution to this problem?

I've gotten a replacement laptop, the new one got the same issue.
That new laptop was sent to the repairs, which was fixed under manufacturers warranty, and just got it back today after 2 weeks. STILL it has the high pitch noise!

I really need help to get rid of this awful high pitch noise.
Even though other people can't hear this high pitch noise, I certainly do and others do as well.

I am so close in returning this product! and I thought lenovo was a good brand :(

A new BIOS was release on 26th June 2015 for The Yoga 3 - 1470 model.  If you are experiencing the high pitched noise issue please install this BIOS and inform us about your experiences afterwards.

There is always an element of risk attached to updating a system's BIOS, please ensure you have a backup of your data before updating your BIOS; (worst case scenario).

When updating your BIOS please ensure that you only do this after a cold start, with a charged battery and the power cable attached providing power.
