Re: Yoga 3 14 inch Touch Screen Issues

2015-07-18, 2:18 AM

It's been about 5 days since I changed the power settings on the Yoga 3 14 to go into hibernation instead of sleep when the power button is pressed or the lid closed. So far, no ghost touches. Will coninue to monitor the situation.

Re: Yoga 3 14 inch Touch Screen Issues

As Amy asked in an earlier post, I recorded the problem in progress:

https://youtu.be/-O9OwdDhwJM

The video was taken morning of July 16, 2015.  Took me a few seconds to find my phone to record it, so it went on for about 30 seconds altogether.  When it started, the taskbar was at the bottom of the screen.  As you can see in the video, it was moved to the left side of the screen (along with a lot of other stuff that was opened/closed/stopped working)  by the time the ghost touches were done.

Betreff: Yoga 3 14 inch Touch Screen Issues

2015-07-19, 14:23 PM

Guys, today is the day! :D

Today my laptop started to show the same phenomenon. The touches didn't appear as fast as in other users' video and they seemed to have centered on a certain spot -  not over the whole screen. Then I decided to lightly hit the screen (not the touchscreen surface but the backside of it) and it stopped.

It might be that I don't understand technical stuff enough to come to this kind of conclusion, but I have the feeling that this actually is a hardware issue since hitting the screen worked fine and caused the touches to stop and I don't see why that could be the case if it is a software issue.(We will see if it works again when the issue appears the next time.)

I had suspected this as well. Since the lid assembly is soo thin the
structural integrity of the screen seems to be strained as a result. I
noticed (and you will too) that when adjusting the screen with one hand,
the LCD screen will get distorted because of the pressure at the edges. I
thought that maybe the tolerances where made too tight and the internals
may shift when the lid is flexed, resulting in false touch input from the
back of the panel.

That seems to be pretty reasonable.
I didn't notice the distorted screen yet as I tend to just leave the lid open after switching off the laptop, but I did realize that it actually requires lots of force to open it again if I happen to close it. So I do indeed fear of breaking the screen.

Even way before I bought this laptop I was reading about peoples' horror stories concerning this laptop (and still I decided to buy this laptop, crazy me, I know :D ). Reading about different time frames that state phantom touches starting on day 1 as well as phantom touches that started after 2 months of receiving the laptop I was literally waiting for my laptop to do the same thing every day. Now that it happened today I laughed like a crazy idiot (crazy me, I know :D ).

Even though this is a really frustrating problem, it is on the other hand also pretty relieving to know that my PC actually has this issue as well, so I don't need to fear the day when I have a presentation in university and my laptop suddenly decides to show it developed some kind of life form. Rather it just finally convinced me to just simply make use of the option to just switch of my screen. That being said, I decided to set up that toggle touch short cut people kindly mentioned a few pages ago and now I am satisfied for the time being.

Still it'd be very nice if Lenovo kept working on this problem as - of course - I'd prefer a working PC as much as everyone else here. :) I know this is a pretty annoying problem considering the amount of money this PC swallows, but instead of getting angry at the Lenovo team here (which can't and won't work faster than already just by screaming at them) people should try to calm down and try to make the best out of this PC as much as possible until Lenovo can come up with a solution (or at least some information about their new findings concerning this being a hardware or software problem as we probably can't expect much if it turns out to be a hardware issue).

And since I already am writing too much I shall end my essay at this point. :D
Until then, peace out! ^_^v

P.S.: If people want me to update about the question if hitting the screen always solves the issue (considering it happens again, that is, which luckily is not the case since I posted my first message) please let me know.

The 3 Pro has as thin if not a thinner assembly but doesn't suffer the phenomena.

I'm new to this issue (bought an open box Yoga 3 14 from Best Buy yesterday-I think I know why it was open box), but in my case I think it is software. Mine acts up after putting it into tablet mode and then back to laptop mode, but if I hit the power button and put it to sleep, it's fine when I turn it back on; no reboot required. It's also fine as a tablet, it's just when it changes mode to laptop that the phantom touches start. I've applied all applicable updates so far. Hopefully the BIOS fix that's been promised can resolve this as I really like this computer otherwise.

I bought mine open box from Best Buy as well (with protection plan). I had
touch screen issues, brought it to Geek Squad, it was still acting up
(actually worse) there, Geek Squad told Best Buy to replace it.

So don't think that just because it is open box it doesn't have the same
protections and warranties. I double checked that with them before
purchasing. (The BB manager did throw a fit about replacing an open box and
came up with a bs charge to add basically because the BB manager is a jerk,
but it still ended up cheaper than a whole new machine.)

No, I understand it has a warranty. I just meant that someone else must have already had issues with it and returned it-that's why it was open box.

Has anyone else tried to change their power settings to Hibernate when the lid closes or the power button is pressed? It's been 6 days and I haven't had the ghost touches yet.

Of course this is not a solution. It's still a form of a workaround. But at least I can use the touch screen once again. That said, it's not like I've been using the laptop for hours at a time.

Worth a look for sure though.

Still waiting for a permanent and REAL fix...
