Are you going to get another Yoga 3, or just get a different one all
together?

I am investigating customer reports of ghost touching on Yoga 3 14 laptops. I have combined several discussions to assist with identifying the scope of this issue.

It would help the investigation if several people could provide links to videos of the problem. I will include these in the investigation.

When I have more information, I will provide an update.

Thank you,

Hi Amy, if there is no new information, please ignore this post like I've ignored your very clear "...when I have more information..."  LOL  Otherwise...

As I've been researching this issue across forums an emerging theme seems to be that many users are convinced it is a hardware problem.  Backing this up, I'm seeing reports from time to time that repair (after lots of software troubleshooting) has involved installing a new touchscreen.

The one point of data that's missing is:  owners with replaced touchscreens have not chimed back in to confirm that the problem is gone.  Doing so would support the claim that there was a run of bad screens, which are slowly moving through the system (I'm not convinced this is the case).

Do you have any indication either way?  Do you have any sense of what percent of units are affected (OK, naive question -- I wouldn't expect a Lenovo rep to answer but no harm in asking)?  In other words:  any new information?  :)

Your help is much appreciated -- thanks for working on this!

-Matt

I arranged to bring in several customer samples that display this issue. The first arrived onsite at HQ today. It has been delivered to my next level support and they will be trying to reproduce the issue. They will then determine if they can resolve it. If repro'd, the case will then be escalated for a solution. I will post again when a solution has been put in place.

Thank you,

Amy thanks, As an update about the two yoga 3 14' I purchased. My wifes was worse than mine, she has the 4 gig and smaller harddrive and the muliti- touching was most of the time. As a systems engineer i pushed support after all the rebuilts and turning on and off HID, etc, for a replacement screen. we are now about 4 weeks into the screen replacemnt and not a peep from my wife other than she loves her new Yoga!.

I have been waiting on mine, 8 gig and larger hard drive since it only does the multi touch points after about an hour of use and if I dont Hibernate, but re-start it doesn't appear as often. I am waiting to hear what you come up with before scheduling mine for a screen replacement. Thanks for all your efforts, I holding off going back to HP laptops, I do like the Yoga!

Roger

Thanks Roger -- my apologies if you noted the successful screen transplant and I forgot!  It's good to know either way.

Re: Yoga 3 14 inch Touch Screen Issues

2015-06-04, 20:14 PM

Went to my local best buy. Noticed they didnt have a yoga 3 14 on display when I noticed it was there a few weeks ago. Asked why they didnt have it, they said the computer was clicking on things on its own.

Went to another best buy. They had two floor models. One floor model didnt register touches on the upper left corner of the screen and the keyboard felt fantastic, really crisp keystroke.  The other model's screen worked fine, but it felt like the keyboard was padded with foam -- super mushy.

They had an open-box available too, tested that out, the top half of the screen didnt register touches. The keyboard on this one was really mushy.

Wondered why the keyboards felt so different. I know that a lot of times laptop manufacturers spread out manufacturing of the same part to multiple manufacturers. Usually its pretty difficult to tell the parts apart -- laptop manufacturers usually (and should) demand that they all adhere to the same working specifications. Looked up the parts list (available on the lenovo website), and yup, there are two different keyboard manufacturers. So it looks like one produces a keyboard that is extraordinarly mushy, the other produces a nice and crisp keyboard. This is probably why some reviewers hated the keyboard and others didnt have a problem with it. This really plays into the extremely poor QC that Lenovo is exhibiting with screens/USB ports seemingly shorting out -- allowing two different keyboards with vastly different feels makes for an inconsistent product and is a very poor reflection on their development process.

But hey, i'm an idiot and decided to bite the bullet and purchase one anyway. Got one with a fully functional touchscreen and a crisp keyboard. Lucked out. Now if only the bluetooth paired with my phillips SHB5500 headphones...

It's hard to determine hardware quality based on store demo machines. Those things are beat on mercilessly and are prime targets for wanabe hackers. Years ago, I watched some kid in a Best Buy putting a thumb drive and rebooting one laptop after another. I don't have a clue what he was doing, if anything, but it was fun to watch as the blue shirts seemed to notice him too, but did nothing. I also observed a mother who let her little kid beat on the keyboard of one PC with his fists while she looked at the one next to it in a BJ's recently. He wailed away and she didn't see anything wrong with it. Bet the keys were a bit mushier after that!

Support had me do the same thing and more but it kept coming back shortly after so they had me send it in for repairs. They told me it is a hardware problem and the parts are on back order. -- Gary
