Yoga 3 14 poor power button location

2015-05-06, 14:58 PM

So far I have enjoyed using the Yoga 3 14, but there is one particularly nasty feature hard-built into this laptop and it is the most idiotic feature I have seen in any laptop:  the power button location.  The power button is on the right side exactly where you are likely to place your hand when you go to pickup the laptop and do something with it. Hit it and the laptop instantly turns off with all your work gone. Whose stupid idea was it to locate the power button in such an easy-to-strike location?

I changed mine so tapping the button causes it to sleep - much easy to recover.

True, but you shouldn't have to change button action at all. It should at least be a button that requires either a longer press time to restart or a double tap to restart. Or, how about having the button inset into the laptop a bit to make it harder to hit?

I have changed the action on my button to ignore any pressing of the button. I don't know what I am going to do when I have to complete a hard reset. Hope it works. Hope it turns on the next time, too.

Personally, don't mind it, and it's actually better than it was on the yoga 2 11, which had it down lower, where I tend to pick up my laptop, so I'd hit it frequently as well, so it really depends on where people grab their laptops..

But, on the flip side, I do understand their logic in that they were trying to mimic a tablet in having the power/volume be close together for easy access when in tablet mode. Is it the best design? *shrug* again, it really depends on how you handle your device and everyone will have their own preferences... I knew where the button was going to be when I purchased it, and again, liked the improvement, to my perspective.

Cheers!

I don't think it's as much a placement issue as it is a ease of use issue. There's no "good" place for the button. Just make it a bit harder to press accidentally? Like sinking in a little bit?

Yep, sinking the button a bit would have been the best choice.

It's the same with both my 2017 Lenovo Flex 5 14" laptop and my wife's 2017 Yoga. The power switch is almost dead center on the right side of the unit. My wife's 2017 Yoga's power switch is much closer to the hinge of the main unit and display so she runs afoul of it far less frequently. I often long for the one on my old Asus laptop just above (behind) the right end of the line of special function keys.

One reply on the forum referred to changing the function of the power button. access settings via the gear shaped settings icon accessed by clicking on the Win 10 taskbar window icon on far left. click on "System" then "Power and Sleep" then on the far right blue highlighted text "additional Power settings" and you will be presented with the ability to change what both closing the laptop and touching the power button do. I saw I had already set the button to put it to sleep but changed closing the laptop to induce "Shutdown" on battery and of course "save settings". I hadn't recalled my prior change to "sleep" from power button pressing which of course makes hitting any key wake it but still requires the code entry to get back at use
