Yoga 3 14 sudden loss of power

2018-02-08, 10:10 AM

Dear community,

Recently my Yoga 3 14" seems to randomly lose power while working on it, even while plugged in. Charging is working fine and the sudden loss of power/shutdown doesn't happen always. Is there anyone that knows how to resolve this issue?

When it loses power the screen goes black and the only way to get it back on is to hold the power button for a few seconds and force a shutdown. The power of the USB ports dies as well since my phone won't charge after the sudden black screen.

Have you checked your Event Viewer logs?

The event logs say:

Source: Kernel-Power

Id: 41

Level: Critical

From what I've read that seems to be caused by the manual shutdown

All normal entries leading up to that?

My only other thought is a heat issue. Maybe get a processor temperature monitoring tool so you can see? There are quite a few available.

Try to re-install the Power management drivers

Tried this but no result.

So it just happened again and now my screen stays black. The keyboard is still functional since I can switch on/off the backlight.

Any suggestions on how to handle this? I don't have any warranty.

Re: Yoga 3 14 sudden loss of power

Current situation:

Saturday I experience another power failure but this time the screen stayed black after multiple tries. The keyboard backlight kept functioning with the FN key. After multiple forced reboots the screen came back on and I backed-up the most important files.

Today I had the same issue and had to reboot 20+ times before I got it functioning again. Each time the screen did work through an external monitor but it didn't boot past the Lenovo logo with circling dots OR it said "Preparing windows repair" while infinite looping. Finally I managed to boot it through the recovery menu (small button on the side) and tried to let it diagnose but didn't see any result.

So summary:

- Power failure with unknown cause

- Screen failure while booting

- External screen is working

- Bootloop with either windows repair or normal boot

So for now I'm working on my laptop and planning to reinstall it later today since I don't see any other option. But I feel like it is some kind of hardware failure. I planned a memory diagnostic for the next reboot (but I doubt it will reboot properly)

Any suggestions?

@Yigit I don't see how changing my battery settings would resolve the real reason behind the issue. I've always maintained the same power management and haven't had any issues.

I wasn't actually sure about this one as well. I found out by mistaken and I was curious if it could work.

You may be right, it may be hardware issue but re-installing the OS could solve the problem as well. Sometimes, Windows Update mess up with Lenovo default configuration
