Yoga 500 faulty power button

2017-07-18, 12:42 PM

My Yoga 500s power button is no longer working. I took it to be repaired and the man (whose competence I now doubt) said he had found a micro switch loose in the case and he didn't know where it came from.

Does anyone know if the power button can be replaced? If so where do I get a replacement and how do I do it?

Id also like to know if there's a way to turn the laptop on without the power button.

Hi Clara6,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Would you have the machine number (example 80R6000YSB) as seen on the sticker or Model machine type from the parts lookup page?

Referencing the power switch from the user manual location (page13) for a Yoga 500 MTM 80R6000YSB :

Using a sample motherboard part number 5B20K36398 for the yoga 500 (shown in yellow marker) as the power button is integrated into the board that could have dislodged thus replacing it may include the entire board similar to the discussion here.

Another way to turn it on is using the Novo Button (item 3 in the image next to the power), using a pointed tool.

Hope this help answer your query.

Regards

Thank you so much for the prompt reply. The model number is 80R60036UK.

I've just tried sticking an earring into the novo button but it doesn't feel like it's pressing anything. I'm wondering if that's because the microswitch that is cellotaped to the lid should be there.

It's looking like my beloved 13!!! month old Lenovo is a write off. Not sure I can justify spending the same money again on something so unreliable. Gutted!

Hi Clara6

The switch would be part of the systemboard Part # 5B20K36404 MB W 80R4 I5 6200U UMA WIN  for the Yoga 500-15ISK Laptop (ideapad) - Type 80R6 / .

Alternatively, you may check back with the technician if he can secure the switch back in place or if he can do a DIY work around to trigger the power switch to turn on.

Regards

Re: Yoga 500 faulty power button

Hi to all in this thread,

It seems that a faulty power switch is not an uncommon occurrence. My son's Yoga 500-14IBD has the same issue. We opened it, lifted the main PCB and found some loose small pieces. No possible repair.

But if you dare to do some SMD PCB rework, it is not too difficult to fix the problem.

I made a quick search and I did find that Panasonic's EVQP7XXXX switches (for example, http://uk.farnell.com/panasonic-electronic-components/evqp7a01k/switch-tact-3-5x2-9mm-2-2n/dp/2079538) have the same footprint. Shame that a 0.5 € switch can ruin a laptop!

I will order one switch and replace the faulty one as soon as it arrives.

In the meanwile, we reassembled the laptop, and we did take the suggestion (thanks for the hint, spidey101!) of using the "Novo" button for switching it on.

Cheers,

Any updates on your fix? Did you manage to get it working again with the panasonic switch you mentioned?
