Yoga 520 touchscreen issue (not working)

I recently bought a Yoga 520 from a local Lenovo's partner store. Everything worked fine, until I recently intalled the latest Windows update and restarted the device. I also enclosed the list of Update I installed until today (09/29). I had contacted the store where I bought the laptop and also consulted the local service center, but both of them couldn't resolve the issue.

Some efforts I had tried:
1. Accessed Control Panel > Hardware & Sound > Device Manager > Human Interface Devices > HID Compliant Touch Screen. I had tried to: 1) disable and reenable it, and 2) uninstall it and restart the laptop, but none of them works (the touchscreen still does not detect touch input).

2. Downloaded and installed the latest Wacom Drive, including the Wacom Dual Touch driver. This also does not resolve the issue.

3. Downloaded and installed the latest NVIDIA and Intel HD's graphic card driver. Again, the touch screen is still not responding.

4. Accessed the Universal Serial Bus Controller > USB Root Hub (xCHI) > Properties > Power Management and disabled the "Allow the Computer to turn off this device to save power". It still doesn't work.

Some other conditions:
1. The Lenovo's Wacom-powered pen works perfectly. The screen detects the digital input, but it does not detect hand/finger touch input.
2. Doing full reset of Windows brings the touchscreen capability back. However, after Windows automatically downloaded and installed the forementioned update, the touchscreen stopped working again.

My prediction is the latest Windows update breaks the capability of Lenovo Yoga's 520 touchscreen capability to detect touch input, although it retains the capability to detect the stylus input.

Any help or opinion to resolve this issue will be greatly appreciated since it becomes very frustrating.

Thank you.

Re: Yoga 520 touchscreen issue (not working)

Update: It worked for a while, but it suddenly stopped working again. It looks like every time I boot up the laptop, there is a chance that it might or might not work.

Re: Yoga 520 touchscreen issue (not working)

Hello Juntis

Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.

Might be a static issue, as you say it can work randomly when it boots up every now and then.
Try a static discharge for this, it may help to resolve the issue or at least get rid of any built up static on the motherboard.

(If the battery is internal, please just skip the remove/replace battery steps.)
1. Turn the unit off
2. Remove the battery and the Mains adapter
3. Press and hold the front power button for 30 seconds
4. Replace the battery and the Mains adapter
5. Turn the unit on as normal

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

Re: Yoga 520 touchscreen issue (not working)

Hello, thank you for replying.

I have tried the solution you proposed, but as the battery could not be removed, it would automatically boot before I could hold the power button for 30 seconds.

I have consulted the Lenovo service centre and also have been contaced by the Lenovo representative. Both of them said that it might be a software/driver-related issue (which is related to Windows), since if it was a hardware one, the touchscreen would not be working at all (not even it would detect the pen input). They advise me to wait for further  update from Windows. I am expecting the October update; let;s just hope it will fix the issue.

Re: Yoga 520 touchscreen issue (not working)

I see, if nothing else then, you could also try to attempt a factory reset, this should rule out software issue.

Note: Please back up all your data as running this reset will delete any data on your machine

1. Turn the machine off and press the recovery button which is located usually next to the power button. If you have a desktop machine you will need to power the machine back on and keep tapping the F2 key.
2. Use the arrow keys and press enter on system recovery. ( Desktop users can skip this)
3. Select “restore from the initial backup” and then “Next”.
4. Click “start” and accept the warning messages.
Length of time can vary depending on the speed of the machine.

If the issue persists, then it would indicate a hardware issue, I would recommend, that you call your local Lenovo support line again and request a repair before warranty expires. Below is the link to the phone list where you can find these numbers

EDIT: Sorry, just re-read your original post, I see you have already done a reset, in this case, it is indeed up to you to wait for an update, or you might consider requesting a repair for the unit, depending on your warranty really.

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

Re: Yoga 520 touchscreen issue (not working)

Thank you for your reply. As I said earlier, I had brought my unit to the nearest service centre, and they insisted that it was a driver/software-related issue. I have two options: Reset my unit (for the third time) or wait for the next update.

Would resetting the PC multiple times give any bad impact to it?

Re: Yoga 520 touchscreen issue (not working)

Exactly what happens to me. Yesterday, the touchscreen worked normally for hours. Even after I tried restarting my unit twice, it still worked well, so  I thought the issue was resolved. However, when I tried to boot it up again today, the issue returns; the touchscreen becomes unresponsive again.  It seems there is a random chance that the touchscreen will or will not work everytime I turn my laptop on.

The Lenovo brand store where I bought this product, local Lenovo service center, and Lenovo representative told me that it is a driver/software related issue, since if it is a hardware one, the touchscreen would not be able to work at all.

Similar case happened to the owners of Thinkpad X1 Yoga back there, but Lenovo rolled an aupdate to fix it. I hope they also do the same for this. If not, let's hope the latest Windows update will fix this up.

By the way, is your touchscreen functional until now, or does it become unusable again?
