I have tried the mini mini HDMI to HDMI adapter for an external monitor of which the Y710 does not recognize the adapter. Is there a specific adapter/device that can be used to extend the display for this laptop?

I am confused with "external monitor of which the Y710 does not recognize the adapter." The Y710 is a gaming rig.
For that specific Yoga, you should have multiple USB ports. For previous clients I've had them use a USB-to-HDMI/VGA/DVI dongle - typically Startech.
A USB-to-DVI is $45 and can be found here: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-External-1920x1200-Graphics-USB2DVIE3/dp/B005G3066Y
The USB-to-HDMI is about $100.
I do not want to say for absolute certainty that this will work for you, but this is a solution I have used many times in large corporations for a variety of manufacturers.
You could always go to a local store that sells this stuff and see what their return policy is. Just try the USB-to-DVI Startech (or other brand) dongle on your laptop.
I am also assuming your external monitor has a DVI port.

Thank you so very much! I ordered the Startech, plugged it in and my ViewSonic monitor came up. You are a god send, again thank you so very much. **You should be getting a $ from StarTech for the referrals!
