Yoga 700 - 14ISK with dual display Intel + NVIDIA GeForce

I recently bought this Yoga 700 - 14ISK with dual display card. What I don't understand is, how does these 2 display cards work / swap with each other. It occurs to me  that better display card  NVIDIA GeForce is not even used. When I try to play some games, the display doesn't seem good, and is blurry and out of focus sometime. Also choppy videos often times. My several years old laptop shows better images and smooth game experience.

So, can someone please tell me how to use this system to have better gaming experience, and better display in general. Is there a way to force use one over the other display card. Which one is better in your experience.

I am sorry, if this is already being discussed, I could not find it anywhere. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Shashi for your response and link.

However, I was looking a specific solution to my laptop model. The link seems to be for windows in general gaming experience improvement, probably for the old / or in general windows systems. As I said, i have 2 display cards in this 2 in one and I am not sure how this works.

Re: Yoga 700 - 14ISK with dual display Intel + NVIDIA GeForce

Hi Sworn,

There are two sets of graphics card in the Y700, one is the integrated Intel® HD Graphics 520 and another is the NVIDIA GeForce 940M 2GB, which one is used depends on graphics load and your preference. So at idling the Intel gpu kicks in.

you can force the discrete GPU (the Nvidia GPU) to run all the time, by going to bios and set it to discrete graphics mode. But this will draw more power and produce more heat, however the graphics performance will be higher.

You have an "Optimus" configuration, this is what switchable graphics has morphed into. The machine will only run the 1000m when it is necessary to run cooler, run quieter, and use less battery power. The machine decides when to turn on the card. When the nVidia card is off, it uses no power. The latest nVidia drivers should have a taskbar utility that tells you when the 1000m is active.  You can override this in the BIOS if you need to for some reason.

Technically, the Intel integrated graphics is always active, although it is not always in use. Nvidia graphics will turn on and off according to need. Software from Nvidia called Optimus automatically switches between integrated (Intel) and dedicated (Nvidia) graphics, according to the application. The easiest way to see which graphics card is in use is to check the "Display GPU activity icon in notification area" option in the Desktop menu of the Nvidia control panel. It should automatically use the Nvidia graphics card when Steam is running. If it does not, you can add Steam to the program settings in Nvidia control panel and select that it should always use the Nvidia graphics.

I hope the above information helps.

Regards,

Shashi
