Yoga 700 - High Pitched Noise with Fan

2015-12-28, 1:35 AM

Hi,

I've testing my Yoga 700 for the past 2 weeks, installing fixes and updates such as the failed graphics mathematical operations test, phantom touches, etc. The latest issue I'm having is when the latpop is handling a light load and I'm working in a quiet environment, the fan spins up and accompanied with it is a high pitched noise. It's not noticeable in an ambient environment, and only somewhat noticeable in a quiet place. But once I do notice it, it's hard to ignore...

I'm wondering if anyone else is having a similar issue? It only seems to make the high pitched noise when the fan starts spinning. The source of the noise is traced to be from left side vent - below the keyboard.

I tried the fix for a previous Yoga 13 post to no success.

Thanks,

i have exactly the same problem. the machine heats up easily and fan makes lots of noise for no reason. new machine, light task...but the review said the machine is very quiet. what is going on? wondering if my unit is faulty...

Same here, I wouldn't call it noisy but it's definitely strange and annoying that the fan spins almost constantly at very light load (e.g. right now when browsing the web and nothing else)...

Considering the other issues you mentioned Lenovo really hasn't done a great job with this machine. I hope a fix comes soon!

Yes, I can hear that high-frequency noise too on my Yoga 500, but only in very very quiet environment. When I attach my ear on the backside of my laptop it is much stronger - and it seems it is related with cpu activity.

but what is more disturbing is normal (low-frequency) sound of the laptop fan

Yoga 500 has same problem like other Yoga models, we definitely need fix for fan speed regulation, because it behaves depending on the cpu activity not on the actual temperature!

do I really need constant turning on-off fan activity with only 40° cpu temperature and normal undemanding cpu activity?

undemanding cpu activity = browsing web, opening folders, starting programs -> all in 2D mode, not anything computationally demanding

more cpu activity = more fan speed (temperature still around 40°)

I rather prefer when fan is switched off and only when temperature goes high it turns on.

Has anyone tried Notebook Fan Control with it? I used that with my old Yoga 13 and it worked well.

I tried NoteBook FanControl where is config profiles for Yoga 11s and Yoga 13 and some more but nothing work with my yoga 500.

Probably registry values didn't match, there is a lot of difference in settings with read, write register, also yoga 13 has left and right fan.. Any idea how to control fan speed on YOGA 500-15ISK?

Hey all, just wanted to give everyone who had the same issue an update.

I got in touch w/ Lenovo Support and had mine replaced it w/ a new fan, but the high pitched noise is still there. It's unfortunate, but seems like the noise is not a hardware defect, rather it's just a little noisy if you're sensitive and tend to work in a quiet space. I'm keeping the laptop, as I'm please w/ the other aspects of it. It would be nice if the noise wasn't there, but it's perfectly fine when the load is light and fan is not on.

Hi, thanks for respond, you are not only one who is telling exactly same thing, Lenovo service centre tries replace fan with new one, but loudly speed is still there..

It's very unprofessional, but they just don't understand, that is not hardware problem but software problem.

We need some lenovo windows utility for controlling fan speed or just new bios with corrected profile for fan behavior depending on temperature, not cpu activity.

Is here someone who knows what can we (all people who bothers about this real and overloked problem) do?

Hi,

I had fan noise. I tapped and pushed firmly  where the fan is (where the noise is coming from) and the issue is sorted. I think that the fan moves out of place during shipping and then makes noise by rubbing on some part of the case. The machine is SILENT now. the air is still blowing. i made a youtube clip of the noise. https://youtu.be/WeY-J5oSZG0 .
