I've heard that the 720 is 'more compatible'/something like that with Windows Ink and general onscreen writing with a pen. Is that the case? I'm looking at a 520, 710 or 720 for university and I would be wanting to use the pen for writing maths mostly - would the newer ones be better for this?

Welcome to the Community Forums.
With the new features offered by Windows 10 update Windows Ink, a better accessory that would allow you more features and control over different function is using an active pen.
Yoga 710 don't have active pen support and may limit usage to capacitive (anything that mimics the finger for the touch digitizer like a passive stylus) so Yoga 520, Yoga 720 and latest Yoga 920 can best offer with Active Pen technology.
Active Pen is best appreciated with sketches/paints as it employs various depth of sensitivity and features to best translate your equation to document easier.
Take time to review your option along with your colleagues with their own experience on using active pens than the passive ones. You can choose the best model depending on your specific needs aside from writing maths and you can always check here on our forums for feedbacks on each model with fellow members too.
Hope this help answer your query.
