Yoga 720-15IKB - Confusing USB-C / Thunderbolt / USB 3.1 specs listed by BestBuy

2021-02-05, 23:56 PM

Hello Lenovo Support,

I've had this Yoga 720-15IKB for 3 1/2 years; I like it a lot, but I've realised that I'm still confused about the USB-C port (on the 720-15IKB's right side; see attached file).

I think mainly due to the way the BestBuy stores (where we purchased it) listed their specs, which listed what looked like (5) ports, as follows:

From BestBuy Specs sheet:

  • (1) USB Type-C port
  • Superspeed 10Gbs USB 3.1 port
  • (2) USB 3.0 ports - maximize the latest high-speed devices
  • Thunderbird port - for connecting advanced monitors and external devices

. . . as if the (above ^) were 5 separate ports. :~\  And when I asked the BestBuy salesperson about where all 5 of the ports were....their explanation was even more confusing.

And now three years on, I think I'm finally realising that the "(1) USB Type-C port" & "Superspeed 10Gbs USB 3.1 port" & "Thunderbird port"....(of which I've yet to use for anything).... are all included in the same port (on the Yoga 720-15IKB's right side)? Is that correct?

Oh, and is the USB-C / Thunderbolt port, on the Yoga 720-15IKB, a latest technology 'Thunderbolt 3' port?  Thanks very much for clarifying !;-)

Hello @Elila,

Thanks for reaching out.

Based on the PSREF page: https://psref.lenovo.com/Product/Yoga/Yoga_720_15IKB

This is correct the USB-C and thunderbolt port is included in the same port.

Also basing off the PSREF page it's a Thunderbolt gen 1.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Jack_Lenovo1

Re:Yoga 720-15IKB - Confusing USB-C / Thunderbolt / USB 3.1 specs listed by BestBuy

2021-02-07, 20:53 PM

Hello again, Jack_Lenovo1,

I guess I do have a follow-up question or two, and thanks very much for that PSREF link.

I noticed down in the lower right hand corner of the PSREF, that the published date says: 'Lenovo - March 2019'.

We purchased our Yoga 720-15IKB in June 2017. And the BestBuy (the store we purchased it from) sales literature & specifications show:

"(2) USB 3.0 ports -- maximize the latest high-speed devices
USB 3.0 ports are backward-compatible with USB 2.0 devices (at 2.0 speeds)."

But the PSREF spec's show: "Ports:  One USB 3.1 Type-C Gen 2 / Thunderbolt, two USB 3.1 Gen 1 (one Always On), headphone / microphone combo jack".

So I'm wondering if those two USB 3.0 (in 2017) ports were upgraded to: 'USB 3.1 Gen1' (by 2019)? Thus the 'Lenovo - March 2019' spec's showing them as 'USB 3.1 Gen1'?

Because our [ Yoga 720-15IKB Laptop (ideapad) - Type 80X7 - Serial Number:  MP199Q58 - purchased in 2017] User Guide (see attached files) also shows 'two' USB ports as being 'USB 3.0 ports'.

Oh, and even though the linked (abv) PSREF doesn't specify the generation of Thunderbolt, are you sure, or how do we know for sure which Thunderbolt gen (T1 or T2 or T3) we have?

Any clarification will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

Hello @Elila,

Thanks for writing back.

I would believe that your machine would have 3.0 since that's the specs provided by the user manual for your specific serial number.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks again @Jack_Lenovo1,3840 x

And when the spec's say just 'Thunderbird'. . .(without a following 2 or 3), does that typically mean that it's Thunderbird gen 1 ?

Other than being a little confused by that 'USB Type-C' port, we've been very very happy with this Yoga 720-15IKB (purchased in June 2017), and 3 1/2 years on it's still running as strong and trouble-free as the day we purchased it !  No problems or failures whatsoever; no problems with touchscreen; no probs w/ fan; no probs w/battery; no probs w/ports; no probs w/ anything; everything has functioned beautifully & perfectly with our Yoga 720-15IKB. =))

So I thought I'd state that here, for both the existing and potential Lenovo users reading this forum, where or course the vast majority of posts are negative with problems/issues &c.

Nonetheless from the excellent performance that our Yoga 720-15IKB has afforded us, I have to presume that indeed the vast majority of Lenovo PC's sold are of the very same excellent high quality as our Yoga 720-15IKB, that we have thankfully been so happy with.

Our [2017] Yoga 720-15IKB spec's:

  • 2-in-1 15.6" 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160 UHD) Touchscreen Notebook
  • Intel Quad Core i7 - (7th Gen) - i7-7700HQ processor
  • 16GB Memory - DDR4 RAM
  • 512GB SSD
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050
  • (1) dedicated power port
  • (1) USB Type-C / Thunderbird / USB 3.1 (all same port; only gripe is that I do wish it had more ports :~\)
  • (2) USB 3.0 ports (backward compatible w/USB 2.0 devices at 2.0 speeds) + headphone & microphone combo jack
  • Built-in Fingerprint Reader
  • Built-in HD Webcam w/two microphones
  • 360° flip-and-flop design
  • Built for Windows Ink
  • Windows 10 w/Microsoft 365 + Wacom Pen Software + Microosoft Whiteboard & Snip & Sketch 10.2008.2270.0

Hello @Elila,

Thanks for writing back.

Yes, the specs sheet should indicate the version of the Thunderbolt port (2 or 3) depending on the generation.

If it would say that it is only Thunderbolt that would most likely mean it only has Generation 1.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Jack_Lenovo1
