Yoga 720 M2 SSD compatibility

2018-04-02, 11:19 AM

Hi,

Is the lenovo yoga 720 (15)  compatible with sata (b+m key) m2 ssd?

As far as I am aware it comes pre-installed with pcie nvme (m key) m2 ssd, so need to know whether it is backward compatible.

For example would it work with with the Western Digital WD Blue 1TB 3D NAND SSD M.2 or would you need to get the more expensive nvme, for example Samsung (MZ-V6E1T0BW) 1TB EVO PCI Express 3.0 x4 NVMe Solid State Drive.

Thanks

Kmo

Hello and welcome,

The way I read the base spec, SATA m.2 drives are not supported.

Ok thankyou.

Further to this, does the Yoga 720 works with "2 sided" nvme ssd?

Some of them are quoted as being 2 sided, but it is unclear whether they are supported.

For example XPG Gammix S10 PCIe Gen3x4 M2.2280 1TB.

So, i can use size 2280 "M" and "B & M" type connector  PCIE drives ?

Can somebody confirm that m.2 "B & M" SATA drives wont work on Yoga 720-13IKB ?

I upgraded a Yoga 720 13ISK today - tested with a SATA M.2 2280 SSD which failed to be recognised, but a Kingston A1000 NVMe SSD (which is B+M keyed) worked just fine. Only uses 2x PCIe lanes so peak read speed is capped to 1500MB/sec, but was a much cheaper drive than the 4x PCIe ones.

I've made a video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVrEs9tgOMg

Thanks for the video. Have you tried  choose in the BIOS "SATA controller mode" from RAID to AHCI ?

Doesn't make any difference - it doesn't recognise any SATA drives in the M.2 slot that I tested.
